St Andrews - Where to Visit

Having been successful in the ballot last year to play this year, in October I'm off to St Andrews (with my dad!) to play the Jubilee and The Old Course. What would those who have been fortunate enough to play/visit St Andrews before recommend doing outside of golf.

We've got 10.20 tee times on both days, so keen to work around this.

Will be in St Andrews on Tuesday AM to Thursday PM playing on Wednesday and Thursday.

Current plan is to play the Himalayas Putting on Tuesday, but aside from that no plans so open to thoughts of those who have been to St Andrews before and any recommendations!

Depends on your priorities... the museum is good, and we went to Old Tom's grave in the cemetery. There's more golf shops than you can manage, the whole town is golfy!

When I saw the thread title I came here to tell you to play the Himalayas - I went there a few years ago when staying near Edinburgh on a non-golfing holiday with my wife (not a golfer), and we thoroughly enjoyed it, so I would go with your plan to give it a go.

St Andrews - Town and Gown walk

St Andrews - both the location of Scotland's oldest university and the Home of Golf, also happens to be one of the most attractive medieval towns in the country. With its harbour, the ruins of its castle and cathedral, and its fine beaches and fascinating old buildings, it makes a superb place...

This is a good circular walk which doesn't take long but takes in the cathedral, castle, harbour, university, etc. Worth doing and helps you get your bearings.

Would echo what others have said.....R&A Museum, and the Dunvegan and Jigger Inn are great. Botanic Gardens is good if that interests you. Generally you can't go wrong just wandering round the town.....there's little shops and cafes galore.

If you've time and fancy exploring further, have a look at some of the local villages.....Anstruther, Pittenweem, Crail, Elie etc.....all lovely.

Another shout for Dunvegan but if 'lunching' there then get in as it opens, it'll fill quickly in main bar area
The myriad of golf shops are a great way to spend a couple of hours

Just go and enjoy the town, just being there was enough for me without making a plan to visit anywhere in particular (other than actually playing of course).

It's still a shame for me that they've done away with the queue at the pavilion as that was all part of the experience of getting on the course, but I guess you were lucky enough to get through the ballot anyway!

I enjoy walking and it's a good place to walk the old harbour and round the castle or along the beach.
The golf museum is very interesting as well.

Just watched a video on the Himalayas putting course . Looks great fun and something me and my wife would enjoy , just need someone to look after the dog while we play .

At this time of year, you should be able to get on quite easily, provided the ladies don't have a comp.
Might be worth checking/booking on the website. You can book 4 days in advance.

Tailend does a good job, but so does Cromars. For Indian food, Johangers. We liked the Russel Hotel, but it's now gone.

With a 10.20 tee off, and the length of round, it'll be approaching darkness when you finish the days you play golf, so other than walking round the town you arent doing much!

Guinness, in Scotland, got to be a pint of Tennents surely?

Absolutely, my understanding is that particularly on the Old Course the caddies are keen to get folk round in decent time and the Rangers are active particularly for morning slots.
