Anyone had any success in this or know anyone who has?

I turn 40 next year and fancy a round on the Old Course and I'm unlikely to secure an invite or freebie so i suppose this looks to be next best thing (other than appearing at the starter at death o'clock).

Thinkits probaly too late for next year? the ballot is done in the middle of september for the following year. (april-oct) and i there were record numbers applying in the opening few hours/days.
I believe you can get nov-mar tee times a bit easier although the ones i have seen have been as packages with hotel accomendation.

I thought the ballot was early september, we played the Old Course via the ballot in May this year, worst weather imaginable, 40mph winds, cold with lashing rain the whole way round, ill for weeks afterwards, marvellous!!!

We booked the winter 3 rounds deal for April so get a guaranteed tee time on The Old Course. I know a couple who got in on the ballot when it was 24 hours but at least being 48 hours now you can plan your trip a bit better. Not sure what the success/failure rate is though and how over subscribed it is.

Have got on via the ballot a few times, just put your name down and check the day before and keep your fingers crossed.

4 of us did it 3 years ago when it was drawn the day before.
We put our names in on the Monday morning and it was drawn that afternoon.
Played the Old Course on the Tuesday.
If you don't get drawn out, there's usually plenty of space on the other courses.
