SPOTY 2025

I hear people talking about all the sports the BBC has lost over the year, and then I read on the BBC website that the Commonwealth Games will now be shown on TNT rather than the BBC. The BBC simply couldn't compete with the price TNT were willing to pay.

Watched it coz Mrs H had it on, and I actually enjoyed it. The pieces were short enough not to bore but included enough to make it interesting, even if it was a sport I’m not fussed about.

I’ll give it 8/10 from me.

I always enjoy it , was a good review of the year

It is a shame it’s not a Sunday anymore

But I’m not sure what other sports awards shows there are but at least they don’t drag it out

If they can't afford the £3.50 required to get the TV rights for the Commonwealth Games then they really are in trouble 😳

Or the fact that the BBC is supposedly the premier broadcaster of the lead nation of the entire commonwealth (or should I say the nation of the head of the commonwealth)and can’t compete to get the games it should lead in says a lot. But then apparently I’m not supposed to comment on this thread 😂

Might be worth renaming the thread to a general BBC thread

But Warner Bros out bid the BBC

As with all the other sports - they have just looked at the initial money they can grab

One event that needed eyes on is the Commonwealth Games so I guess it’s ok knowing they will have less viewers but more money into pockets

There will potentially also be some stuff broadcast on free to air

very little the BBC can do

I know it’s been reported re Beeb missing out on the commonwealth games, but the more this kind of “ outbidding” happens, the more it is a nail In The coffin of having a tv licence. I mean what exactly is the point. What are you actually paying for. The only thing that the BBC won’t be outbid on is SPOTY 🫣

Useful to have in the unlikely event they ever get sued.....

Not every licence payer is interested in football/sports and would criticise the beeb for paying the exhorbitant fees.
So they're damned if they do and damned if they dont.

I'm with Hobbit and Arthur Wedge, i enjoyed SPOTY, always do,and it was as good this year as it always has been.

I totally get that, but the money the BBC gets from the tax payer should be spread out between soaps, reality tv, documentary’s, sports etc etc. there’s no doubt they make fantastic documentary’s like Attenboroughs planet earth etc. but the coverage of sports is Diminishing. Over the last X years we have had Apple TV, Netflix, Prime, TNT, Sky etc etc whilst the BBC seems to be going backwards. That’s without mentioning Amazon fire sticks
Younger viewers hardly watch any mainstream terrestrial TV preferring YouTube etc. The BBC is unrecognisable from 10 up years ago. Be interesting to see where it is in 10 years time.👍

Do you think the cost to acquire sports may be significantly higher than other types of TV?

And if so, how would you expect them to "spread" their finances.

I'd have thought the BBC would absolutely adore having the rights to big sporting events like The Open, The Masters, more live football, Formula 1, etc. But surely if they invested in certain sports they no longer have the rights to, it would seriously limit what else they can invest in. And it would anger more people than it pleases.

Why can’t the Beeb win more bids for sports?

Sky U.K. revenue = £10.3 billion
Beeb revenue = £3.8 billion

Both have operating costs marginally above their income. I guess that the extra billions Sky rakes in goes out buying various rights.

Obviously, the BBC budget is not just competing with Sky. It is Sky + TNT + Amazon + Premier Sports + whatever other subscription service pays for sport.

And most sporting rights are fairly niche, and would probably only be an interest to a small portion of UK population. So spending big on a sport could be seen as controversial

I dont think they need any licence fee money. They get plenty and more from advertising, subscriptions etc.
As i said before, there is so much more from the BBC.
