SPOTY 2025

I find it particularly weird that the BBC have continued with this as they seem to be showing less and less sport for various reasons,
It’s like having the soap awards on sky sports.

I have never agreed that the person who wins should be part of a team but that’s another subject.

Not for me I’m afraid and not watched for many years
Maybe for it to have any merit, it should be a joint presention between BBC, TNT and Sky. Shown on all 3 platforms, but covering nearly all sports.

The change is that it used to be Sports Review of the Year and the award was presented as part of it. Now the BBC has so few TV rights that it cannot do a detailed review of the year as it has no footage. This year at least they have rights to the two successful women's teams but aside from that they are a bit stuck. The focus, however, has shifted to the awards as they are struggling to do a meaningful review.

For sports or soaps? 😂.

I understand some people like it but it’s not for me.
I never liked an individual getting it that played a team sport and it always seemed to me that the winner was of a sport shown on BBC.

If you take Chloe Kelly as an example during the Euros she was mostly used as a sub, for her to win it that is a snub towards the rest of the team and her manager.

Also in recent years a lot less of the top people seem to be in attendance but I don’t watch it so I might be wrong there.

I had not realised she was on the list. So, the award could be won by someone not considered good enough to start a match 🤪

I think most of the time, players in a team are fully aware if there is an individual on that team that is a stand out star, and thus would not begrudge them of getting awards.

But, what you say very much holds true when a player such as Chloe Kelly is put on the list. She is not deemed good enough to make the starting line up of the womens football team, but deemed good enough to be amongst the top people in ALL of sport when being nominated for this award, ahead of her team mates!!!!!!

I suppose it would be like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being on the nominations list for the 1999 Balon D'Or, ahead of the likes of Scholes, Keane, Beckham, Giggs, Yorke, Cole, etc because he had one significant stand out moment in the season.

Kelly managed to get into the team of the tournament as well 🤷‍♂️

The BBC was still broadcasting The Open and the BMW PGA in standard definition when Sky had been showing European Tour events for years already in HD. It was for the best.
I doubt the BBC, in this day and age, can afford to buy the rights for The Open and other sporting events that Sky have now paid the rights for.

Current best odds with the bookmakers:
McIlroy 4/7
Norris 4/1
Kelly 9/2
Littler 20/1
Kildunne 80/1
Hampton 80/1

Thinking about the people likely to vote, I'd be a layer of McIlroy. I don't know anything about Kildunne, but she might be the best value looking at people's comments on here.

I think I read the other day that the beeb are a billion quid out of pocket in comparison to where they were 15 years ago.

They'll be broadcasting re-runs of Brookside in the prime time slots if they don't sort themselves out soon....

It's an outdated broadcasting business model, and the winner will be one of the women in the final nominations
