Course is closed due to ice so headed down to the range to work on some general wood play.
Only took the driver and 3w and once I had hit enough drives to be happy I moved onto the 3w, the NEW 3w (JPX825). First few screamed up the middle with a lovely flight and nice sound... then on ball 5 I noticed a funny sounds coming from the head area when I struck the ball. Gave it a few more to see if it was just my hearing but no, still making an odd pinging sound.
Closer inspection at the base of the shaft, just a cm or so above the hosel was 4 hairline cracks running vertically for about 2-3cm. On flexing the shaft they cracks open up like a bit of splintered bamboo.
Surprised at the failure of the shaft to be honest as after 5 years of using Mizzy gear it's the first time I have had a problem.

Bays at the range are huge with no obstructions or any obstructions near by so no chance I have clipped anything with it and the shaft itself shows no impact mark as my first thought was "what did I hit?"

Not overly bothered as I have a spare 3w that I can use as I realise there will no doubt be a delay in getting it swapped due to the festive period but it's under warranty so know it will get replaced.

Maybe I just don't know my own strength after my 2 month layoff :D

unlucky, but it could have happened at a worse time of year etc etc

someone will no doubt post that it's because it's a 'made for' shaft....but there are probably a number of possible contributory causes, and it's going to happen from time to time - normally early on.

Just one of them things I think! I think it would end up a VERY long thread if we started to debate whether it was because its a Made for xxx shaft or a component one and tbh there's something on the TV I want to watch tonight LOL !!

Strictly?

I would have said it could have been hitting hard range mats regularly but as it was not new clearly not the case. I know of cases where heads work lose from people who regularly use them at the range and they eventually snap the shaft at the end of the hosel or the head shoots down the range and you are forced to do the walk of shame once everyone is persuaded to stop firing

No walk of shame today HJS, I was the only one there. Was great, totally deserted. I think the issue with the shaft is, like everything, there will always be a rogue element in mass production. With what I paid, I really would never complain either :D

Its what happens when you throw clubs at your bag and kick it. I'd tell you to jog on.

could be due to a non carbon friendly bag to being hit or rubbed by an iron while in your bag causing a scratch, plus sub zero temps would not have helped
