There seems to be a lot of spitting one the course by professionals these days, especially in the US, lead by Tiger Woods. Does anyone think it is necessary for top golfers to spit, being atheletes, or should it be discouraged and even have a 2 shot penalty applied for those that do?

a two shot penalty is harsh, I do think it should be discouraged though. not a plesant thing to do, especially when your are being broadcast around the world!

Its a modern day phenomenon that is truely disgusting. That said if you ever watch re-runs of football from the 70's on ESPN they were all at it.

I don't think you can penalise anyone for spitting but I guess pros do have a responsibility not to do it if they are aware the camera may be on them.

Nasty business. I can't think of the last time I spat on a golf course. Done it plenty of times playing football or rugby but that's because you build it up with such a physical game. Can't understand why you need to when playing golf?

I played a matchplay game tonight, and my opponent did nothing but spit all of the way around. Understandable in the rough, but when he was on the green and on the tee it was a spit too far....

In all honesty it made the victory even more sweet!

I think it is a disgusting habit on the golf course and off the course,I can understand it on the football pitch or rugby field but anywhere else is just plain foul absolutely no need for it, if people need to get rid of phlemy stuff or similar then surely spitting into a tissue would be more appropriate.
While in town today we saw no end of people spitting in the street, filthy habit!! :(

I'd simply say no and threaten fines for those that do....
Unnecessary and hardly good manners.
