...............Iv only gone and chopped 1 and 3/4 in's off the shaft of my i15 driver so its now at 44"s........Why?

Well seeing as the course was quite tonight i decided to head out and play 9 holes.....No one about and i know it was probably slightly outside club rules but i hit 4 balls off every tee on the par 4's and 5's.....

All with the 3 wood and driver just for comparisons....I held the driver down the grip on 2 and normally on the other 2 balls and to say that there was a difference would be understating the outcome....
I was about 20 mtrs longer than the 3 wood on a bad drive and at least 40 on a good hit....I found more fairways than i ever have and if i did miss it wasnt by much....It was easier to draw the ball and also to get straight hits im guessing because im now hitting the centre of the face more often....
When i did catch a cut it wasnt exaggerated half as much when gripping down....

Now as there is only 1 inch in the difference between my 3 wood and my driver i actually feel comfortable and confident addressing the ball......

not nuts, smart, most would benefit from a shorter shaft. I read some research info on it recently I'll post if I can find it

i have a bit of red tape on my callaway driver to remind me not to hold it at the very end. i was getting more accuracy this way. just habbit now.

Did you retape the grip with some extra wraps?

I put a mid size Golf Pride New Decade on James....With 2 wraps of tape.....

I already had one on it as i like the mid size but i said seeing as i was going to be shortening it then the diameter of the shaft would also change as i was getting closer to the hosel....

So it seems nice and comfy now with the Mid size and the 2 wraps of tape....

A hell of a lot easier to hit too in fairness....

Chief, you must drive yourself nuts!!!!! You could be the new Homer!! ;)

Literally Robo.
Im closer to Paddy Harrington id say with all the fiddling.

Still i think now i have this driving lark sorted ill be fine...I was the only real issue that i had with my game...The rest is a work in progress...

I got custom fit by Titleist for my 910D2 and the shaft is shorter than most other people I play with yet I can drive the ball as far or further than many.

I actually spoke about it to the pro earlier and he said that many of the stock drivers are longer to help you hit the ball further.

My driver was C/F at 44.5 inches. Its the smart obvious choice, more control is better than 20 yards longer in the crud!

:fore:

I recently made the decision to grip down a little on my driver as well (instead of holding almost the tip of the grip like I used to) and coupled to reducing swing speed to about 90% my driving accuracy has improved out of sight. Totally worth the loss of 20 yards to avoid the trouble I was finding 4-5 times a round.

All for shortening the shaft but surely its going to impact swing weight and balance

2 or 3 ounces will be very very minimal, the extra layer of tape will probably level it out again.

We play medal golf not European tour level. Unless your KJ Choi you'll never notice any difference.

I got custom fit for my driver shaft and got it shorter than standard. IMO stock shafts are generally too long and too whippy. Its all about marketing (ie distance) than accuracy. Great heads need a great shaft!

I will ALWAY get custom fit for my driver if nothing else!

I recommended 2 inches, you nearly got there :) Was the obvious answer to your problems based on it being 3 inches longer than your 3 wood!

Not sure Fundy but now it feels like important just swinging a bigger headed 3 wood. Haven't used it in competition situation yet but if last night is anything to go by its happy days.

I did a little homework on it first though. It seems that the average length of driver on the professional circuit is 44.5 inch. Makes you wonder don't it?
