There is like many others I presume a large hill up to our estate which due to todays snow became impassable today. The council have done a great job on the main roads but side roads forget it. I got home about 2.30pm and just skidded on the hill going nowhere. In front of me a small but valient band of neighbours trying to clear a path for cars so I got out to join them. I'm digging away when I turned to see a van behind me, the driver waving his arms about effing and blinding at me. I said what's up? he goes get out of the way I had a good run at it (the hill) then. I couldn't believe it.
I explained in less than un-gentlemanly temrs I was digging snow so people like him could get up the hill...knob.

The selfish nobs near me have done my swede in

I live in a really hilly part of the outskirts of chatham.

On the steepest hill in the area there are salt-bins at the top and bottom of the hill.

The minute these were filled yesterday the locals were down there with buckets, filling them up and then using the contents on their garden paths.

I cant understand why people have this obsession with having an immaculate garden path and square metre of pavement outside their houses, really cannot see why they bother.

And now because of these cretins it is unlikely that the lorry for the co-op will be able to get up the hill in the morning so therefore all the local old folk will not be able to get their essentials.

In our close it's a real turn to get out onto the side road leading to the main road and everytime we have snow it freezes and you can't turn the car properly in time to get near the road. Every year three of us dig two tracks a chassis wide and grit it to give everyone a chancce to get out and moving down the road. What happened last time (no significant fall yet - keeping everything crossed it continues) was some women did exactly what others described and started shovelling off the road and putting it on their paths.

In the end one of the guys lost the plot a tad and removed the shovel from them and basically told them he'd break them if they tried it again. They just couldn't see what was so wrong!

When I was a kid I remember my Dad having to leave his car a couple of roads away as he couldn't get it up the hill to our house.
He was a bit potted as it was around 800 yards away from home. He got the shovel out of the garage and started digging two tracks from our house. Me and my brother pitched in and helped him dig the aforementioned tracks from our house all the way down to his car.

Not one person came out to help. Sure, they all looked out of their windows and obviously knew what we were doing but chose to keep warm and dry in their houses.
After several back breaking hours we reached the car.

Greatly relieved, my Dad threw the shovels into the back of the car and we made the relatively short car journey back to our house.

Imagine my Dads complete anger when, as soon as we reached home everyone else who had abandoned their cars suddenly emerged from their houses and walked down to their cars and drove them home using the path we had just dug.

He was absolutely furious and prior to moving from the area NEVER spoke to the selfish b*sta*ds ever again.
Looking back, a much older and wiser person, I have to greatly admire his reserve. A lesser man would have gone out and tw*tted the bloody lot of them.
Proud of you Dad. ;)

I always sweep the snow off my path and drive, and then salt it (normally with dishwasher salt, as it is easy to pour straight from the bag). This is because my drive is on a hugh slope, and if there is any snow on it I either can't get my car up onto the forecourt, or, if it is already there, it shoots off into the road like a tobogan the moment the hand brake is released. I'm not leaving it on the road for some idiot to drive into.
