It's a little cheeky but I'm sure you give them plenty of custom anyway, but if you go this route it may be worth having a nose at American Golf first and even use their bay. Get an idea of the makes/models that may suit including price point as you can then give an early guide rather than trying models that won't work in the 45 mins. I'm guessing that may be quite tight on time so may allow the focus to be more on fitting the iron rather than just deciding what brand may work.

Just a thought, not sure if others agree whether that would help or not?

That is a good suggestion. At the moment he may end up spending 25 minutes + on the different brands and not leave long enough for refining his chosen option. Yes, AG have done well out of both of us over the years so I would not feel too guilty about that one. I am sure they benefit well the other way also, fitter gives the specs AG get the business.

I would also go down the AG route to try a few different brands and narrow it down that way.

I have to say that AG have improved a lot over the past year (the Belfast one has anyway). Brand new bays, new trackman, wall with all the shafts/heads you could ever want.

Last year I went into AG and bought a set of Ping G's just after the G400's came out and was able to get a decent custom fit with them for a lot less than the G400's. I guess I didn't get to try every single shaft in the world but got the lie, grips, length etc all done and was happy. I did try a number of other brands but the Pings suited me and were a lot cheaper than the other brands.

I also went in recently and tried all the new drivers with no pressure to buy one. Spent about an hour trying every one and different shaft combos and then just left.

There is nothing wrong with paying a fitting fee, getting specs and buying elsewhere.

You have paid for their time and expertise so it can’t be cheeky. If it’s free even if you don’t buy then it’s their policy so fill your boots.

First up I'd go to the fitting agnostic in mind that what you desire may not be what is best for you. Also not to be to disappointed if you find out you favourite manufacturer turns out to be the worst.

Second decide up front if you will be buying from the fitter you go to see, or if you are just going to have a fitting to see what manufacturer, club length and lie is best for you and then take those figures and buy online. Generally if you buy from the fitter they will take the cost of the fitting off the price of the clubs you buy.

Find a fitter that you can trust and that has a good selection of different manufacturers. American Golf obviously springs to mind, but there are other good fitters and most clubs Pro shops that can provide a good selection.

Some manufacturers will offer any shaft and grip at no upcharge, this can make a massive difference if to sets of clubs are similar in the stats. Example when I got my clubs it was a toss up between a Taylormade set and Mizuno set, Mizuno had no upcharge, Taylormade was an additional £8 per club for the shaft that worked for me, plus the price of a different grip, I bought the Mizuno's

I recently went to a demo day at Woburn, booked a slot with the pro and hit several different makes with multiple shafts to dial in the numbers. Ended up with a set of Titleist AP3's with non standard shafts and paid less than I would have for off the shelf at AG.

Nice to give an end to a thread. My son went for a fitting at AG in Gosforth, Newcastle. It was very good, range of heads, shafts etc and the fitter worked well with my son. He narrowed the choice down to Ping i200 and Callaway Apex Pro.

He then booked a fitting, paid for, at a club pro fitting centre a few days later. This was both to double check the initial fitting and also for the sheer fun of it. They didn't have the Apex Pro but he tried equivalents and the pings again. The session was thorough but he didn't strike it as well this time. We were driving home and he was a bit down, not really any wiser. I decided to swing the car around and go back to the AG shop.

They managed to get us in the fitting bay within 10 minutes with the same person as before. He hit the Callaway Apex Pro beautifully and consistently and decided to go for them. Project X stiff shafts, 2 degree upright. They look gorgeous.

They arrived within 6 days and we went to a grass driving range last night. He hit them consistently well and the dispersion was ridiculously tight. I hit a few balls with them and found the same. The sweet spot is too tight for me but they felt a beautifully balanced club, easy to swing. I hit them easier than my own, oh dear 😱.

All in all, very good experience with AG and a very happy son who is looking to annihilate me today at Moogie's course 😁.
