I've thought of another absolute shocker, Bruce Springsteen, Santa Claus is coming to Town. I don't think he hits a single correct note in the whole song ?
I'm not pogues and Kirsty fan ,so that gets a thumbs down from me .
Shaking Stevens merry Xmas everyone I quite like ,it's a bouncy xmassy song.
Kevin bloody Wilson's Santa Claus you &$#@&+?%£€¥^°
Is a good grin but my favorite is the Irish fella sending his sweetheart the twelve days of Xmas for real.cant remember who it's by or even what it's called but it's very funny
Hard to pick a favourite to be honest. I like all the usual ones, but then they get overplayed too early so by the time Christmas Day arrives you're fed up of them all anyway. Slade, Wizzard, Queen's Thank God It's Christmas, Greg Lake's I Believe In Father Christmas, Mud's Lonely This Christmas, those ones are all pretty good.
Actually, scrap that, my favourite Christmas song is definitely this one:
As for worst ones I guess it would be the more depressing ones. John Lennon's War is Over is quite dreary and tedious. The Band Aid one is ok but the lyrics are a bit pious. I don't really like the old school ones that harp on about Jesus either.
Hearing Pogues/KMcC signifies Xmas is around the corner!
But Band Aid songs ('84 anf '14) really invoke the Xmas 'spirit' for me! ELP's 'I believe in Father Christmas' come close, especially as the 'cloned' part reminds me of childhood radio requst stories of Diana on th Sleigh. There's even a version involving Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) who wrote my other 'favourite' - Christmas Song - with the immortal last words - Te Christmas sporit is..not what you drink!
LT - you are obviously beyond help when it comes to musical taste!!!! The only one you could have mentioned to make it worse is Christmas Wrapping, the original by the Waitresses not the rubbish cover by the Spice Girls.
Honourable mentions: Slade, Merry Xmas Everybody; Mariah Carey, All I Want For Christmas is You; The Pogues & Kirsty McColl, A FairyTale of New York; Eagles, Please Come Home For Christmas; Chris Rea, Driving Home for Christmas; Eartha Kitt, Santa Baby; Santa Claus is Coming to Town, The Jackson Five.
The worst? John Lennon, Happy Christmas (War is Over).
Dishonourable mentions: The Waitresses, Christmas Wrapping; Paul McCartney, Wonderful Christmastime; The Pretenders, 2000 Miles;
I'd argue there isn't a decent Xmas song at all, most of it is sickly garbage.
Maybe Band Aid because Phil Collins rips it on the drums is an exception ?
There is only one right answer for the best for me as nothing beats Spectors wall of sound. My daughter surprised me by singing it as a solo in a Christmas concert she was in and introduced it by saying she was singing it for her dad. I was in absolute bits in the audience.
As for the worst then just about every other one apart from the Phil Spector album, Pogues and Badly Drawn Boys Donna and Blitzen. Which is ace.
