So what are you listening to at the moment?

Hi all. Through our mutual love of The Fall, author and broadcaster Steve Pringle has asked me to appear on his podcast, where I supply 10 tracks based on pre-determined themes. The show was recorded in July and has gone live today. You can listen to the show at https://www.stevesmixtapes.com/

My show is #042.

There are also various platforms like Facebook, YouTube and Apple Podcasts where you can listen in as well. All of these are at the top of the website listed.

Hope you enjoy the show, and at least some of the music.

Enjoying a bit of Michael Marra at the moment. A Dundonian - known as the Bard of Dundee. Very eclectic music. I find his song Mother Glasgow very moving, loaded as it is with references that many, if not most, Glaswegians will recognise.

I downloaded the lyrics to that to try to understand it more.
Then I had to download a "translation" to try to understand it more.
With a very eclectic taste and interest in music and an avid supporter of folk clubs in the 70's, thank you for that.

The Kane Brothers aka Hue and Cry…version is superb…but I especially like the rawness and passion of the original.

And if you haven’t…you can find out quite easily about how the Tree, the Bird, the Fish and the Bell, relate to Let Glasgow Flourish.

He also does a great version of Green Grow the Rashes (the Burns poem set to a Trad Scottish tune tweaked no doubt by Burns for the purposes of a setting for his poem)

I got that from my google of St Mungo.
I've now just listened to "Freda Kahlos visit to the Taybridge Bar" ... I may be gone for a while...
I love discovering music I've never been aware of.
👍

I'm "listening to", but watching, "The Wrecking Crew" on Prime TV.
Astonishing anthology of a group of session musicians who dominated the popular music scene for decades.
Astonishing info about some of tbe biggest hits and albums ever recorded.

I read the book a few years back but the docu brings it to life.

As I filter my vinyl for what will fit in my new ‘sitting/listening room’ units I’ve just had Carpenters Now and Then spinning…Karen C does a beautiful version of Leon Russell’s Masquerade - plus Yesterday Once More…classic from back then with the 50s covers to follow.

And currently spinning…Peggy Lee The Best of…now wow…bit before my time, but could that girl sing…perfect bit of Jazz, Swing, Latin and Blues. Completely coincidentally Peggy Lee was a contralto just as was Karen Carpenter.

Think both are currently looking like being on the ‘bench’ upstairs - though Peggy Lee might make the starting line-up (I’ve room for maybe 375-400 in my starting line-up). Can get another 150 on my ‘bench’ upstairs…plus I’ve lalready filtered about 150 left in the loft - mostly classical, folk and oddities.

The folks who live on the hill…1957

How did I miss this first time round. Fish out of water by Chris Squire of Yes.

Got that on vinyl….its a cracker. Though I missed it also, as I missed Steve Howe’s solo stuff. Didn’t miss Jon and Vangelis though.

Squire’s vocals are uncannily like Anderson’s. Bit like Phil Collins sounding like Pater Gabriel on the immediate post-Gabriel Genesis albums.

So what are folks' votes for the best solo album by a Yes member?
Fish Out Of Water is great, but I think on balance it has to be Six Wives Of Henry VIII.

I’d go for Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Wakeman. But fish out of water is really growing on me.

I must admit to really liking JttCotE…but not sure whether that may simply be because I know it so well having listened to it so many, many times. FooW I like, but it’s relatively new to me.

Bit like Supertramp and Even in the Quietest Moments. For some reason I missed it when released, though I have and love the two preceding it and the one immediately after. I’ve only recently listened to it and it doesn’t resonate with me very much at all. Do I just love the three I have as I’ve listened to them a lot over 40yrs…and if I hadn’t they’d be like EitQM to me…a bit meh…? Dunno.

And the same applies for RWs Six Wives…I have Journey and a couple of later of his that I really enjoy, but Henry…hmmm…

I don't much care for Journey. I haven't listened to it much, primarily because every time I try those dreadful out of tune vocalists just ruin it.
Quite why Wakeman keeps using them is a mystery to me - perhaps they're old mates of his in possession of some incriminating photos 😅
They're not so bad on King Arthur, possibly because they had a chance to do several takes in the studio? (Journey is a live album, of course)

I really like Journey, I saw it played live about 120 years ago, I listened to it a lot more than his other albums although I did see him play 6 wives and arthur earlier this year which was very good.
