After missing last weeks game, we had our usual 12 booked in for holtye yesturday, a nic little 9 hol that can be quite punishing, but after a couple of medioca games, and then missing a week i was really up for it.

arrived nice and early, all prepped on the tee and ready to rock, up come my turn ...WALLOP... a 270 yard par4 opener and im sitting about 20 yards shy of the green bang central... (at this point im thinking this is going to b a good day).... chip was ok, about 8ft away, lipped putt and off the hole with a nice tidy par.

onto the 2nd, a pretty simple par 3, no wind,, 145 yards, SHANK 8I... chip 2 putts... ok

What followed was another 7 holes of pretty good golf, but just a sheer lack of being about to score, it was amazing.

So at the turn i adopt a new approach, as a rule, off the tee my driving and 3w is pretty solid, but as i had bagged a massive 9 points on the front i thought id enjoy the back 9 with something different, NO WOODS at all, 4i off the tee on all the holes where a driver or 3w wood normlly be uniform. Now what was funny is up to 4months ago i never carried my 4i, i hated it, but yesturday, i didnt hit on bad 4i all the back 9, ok it made hitting some of the par 4 longer ones hard work, but some of the best ball striking was had and even though i finished with a 14 points on the back 9, i feel i played some of the best golf i have ever played.

Seriously thinking of having a few games a month with no woods in the bag at all and really work on long irons.

I left my driver and 4w in the car on Saturday. Had 30 points, and to be honest, the problem was a very cold putter, not the lack of length off the tee.

i think i left my short game in the garage which was the real reason i scored so badly, but it was interesting that dropping 50 yards off the tee didnt see any drop in scores, infact an improvement.

it was also a nice change playing 5i/6i into par 4 greens instead of 8i/9i, would you drop the woods again murph

Possibly. The problem is convincing your partner that he isn't going to lose a fiver every time (he didn't).

I find that I hit the same clubs all the time. The course is short in the winter, so driver wedge every hole, except the par 5s so driver, 4w, wedge.

If I leave the driver out, I end up hitting 4i, and then say 8i. I still only need two clubs.

Even in the summer I go months sometimes without using a particular club. I quite often take 5 clubs out in a pencil bag to mix it up a bit.

On the other hand, I love hitting my driver as hard as I can. It's fun, and golf is meant to be fun.

golf is fun.... murph what have you been sniffing, its a cruel sport.... not sure why we keep coming back.

i only have one regret from yesturdays game, i didnt have the 4iron in the bag. was definately more fun using different clubs on approach.

I played the back nine on Saturday using nothing more than a 19* hybrid off the tee.

I came back in 46, and considering I had an 8 at the last (I tried to play a stupid chip shot that cost me dearly), clearly keeping it in play off of the tee is the way to go.

I still bought a new driver though :D

SB, i agree that keeping it in play is the way forward, but what was weird was that i

A) chose a club that i hate to use off the tee
B) driving wasnt actually the problem with the poor scoring.

im looking forward to more days where i mix it up just for something different.

Seems like a good way of practicing with clubs and shots that you're not overly familiar with

Sometimes you just need a change to keep things interesting :)
