How come that so many people claim to be'sports psychologist', but in fact they don't have a single reputable qualification to their name!.To claim such a thing you must have gone to a university etc, but some very famous names in the industry are just 'con men'.I'm amazed that tour pro's would even consider using such charlatans.
Interesting to think that this industry is regulated by a 'tootless tiger' who doesn't give a damn!

There are a number of high profile 'sports psychologists' that assist top pro golfers, that have never achieved a single qulaification in their lives. They advise pro's but do no better than you or I.There is a regulating body that ignores this practic??? Why?

Well. This is most unusual (again).

A very new (today) member joining us with an immediate rant without even introducing him/herself first. Perhaps there is some angst there that needs to be released or could it possibly be that there will be a link to follow soon?

I think I'd prefer to trust a pyscologist without any qualifications, but with years of experience that understood what I was going through, rather than a kid with a piece of paper.

Why so upset ?

PS ignore Leftie, he's a grumpy old fart.

;)

unless, of course, he's right.

In which case then he's a wise old sage.

:o

The point is, does it really matter?

If a person says he is a sports psychologist and is totally useless he is not going to hurt anyone in the way that a non qualified doctor or surgeon would. If someone appointed him it is up to them to satisfy themselves as to the persons ability. I have read many sports psychology books and could probably help many golfer from what I have learned but I cant see where I could possibly do any of them any harm.

Most sports psychology is pretty basic stuff if you study it - in golf its the usual, dont think ahead, have a good pre shot routine, don't be negative and loads more pretty obvious things that will help you play better and, whilst I think that a qualification in the subject can prove that someone really has studied their subject, the proof of their ability, in reality, is results - but, as I said at the beginning, no one gets hurt if the teacher is non qualified

a couple of things wrong here, possibly

is there a regulating body for sports psychologists? true you can take a degree in the subject but that's not the same as regulation. who says the regulators (if any) are qualified to regulate?

who said Freud and Jung were qualified - it could only have been themselves, and then subsequently people taught by F&J said others taught by those who were taught by F&J were qualified. have they done damage? - certainly. how many now suffer from neuroses that they would never have heard of and would never have worried about.

happiness is ignorance

I would have thought the word Psycholiogist is a legally protected word, in the same was that any one can call them selves a nutritionist but you cant call your self a dietition unless you are qualified

It's been exactly 48 hours (poss. +5 minutes as I type this) and Simon999 has not had the courtesy of coming back after his original posts.

Still waiting for the link, or is he a genuine newbee??

If you are genuine mate, come back to us and give us more info on yourself and the background to your posts.
