SLR Camera's

Looking at getting a 2nd hand SLR for my birthday at the end of the month. Been using my old man's SLR for when out walking the dog and a recent trip up to Northumberland and have managed to get some clear decent pictures but still need loads of practice.

I've had a few offered but they are around 10-12 years old and think they may be slightly out of date technology/features wise so looking for something more up to date but within my budget. Kind of compared this theory to golf clubs!!

Looking at around £100-150 tops - any advice on camera's plus lense's too for a newbie in the world of SLR.

Probably best expanding your budget a bit. A very cheap lense tends to be that kind of money.

I vetured into the DSLR world a couple of years ago and bought a Nikon D3200 and found it a good starting point.

Think I have a D3200 languishing at the back of a cupboard. Two lenses, 1 is something like 18mm to 55mm and the other is something like 55mm to not sure but 200mm. Rucksack and tripod...

Have a look here http://www.kenrockwell.com I'm a pro photographer & a Nikon man. Ken Rockwell, on his website, tells which Nikons are worth having & which are rubbish. You may get a D300 for your budget, the latest Nikons are hardly any better.

One for the canon camp here. Started off with a 550D which can be had for your budget and recently got a 5dmkii and building up my lens collection. Love love love them.
if your out walking your dog and landscape from afar I recommend the 70-200 f4 lens for taking crackers. Lighter glass that the 2.8 and more than ample.

yea it's not a cheap hobby! Enjoy though as the rewards are brilliant.

I'd love to but can't stretch that far unfortunately.

A mate of mine has offered me a Canon EOS 400D with 2 lenses, external flash, tripod and bag for £175ono. Probably take £150 for it I guess.

I would recommend getting your hands on a few Canons and Nikons and then buying the best one you can afford that feels right. Neither company has made a bad camera in years and both are capable of wonderful results. But, they do feel very different in the hand.

Personally I'm a Canon man. The positioning of controls just felt right to me, and Nikons felt a bit awkward. But that's just me. I know plenty of people who feel exactly the same but opposite. And we're all correct.

Unless you can find a better option, that's not a bad start. Personally I'm a Canon user myself, and still find my 350D more than adequate for what I want. It's the lenses that can and do make the difference.
Have a gander at that web forum I said about earlier, I accept that it's mainly populated by Americans, but it's a good place to get a feel for things all photographic.
To be honest though, most of the time if I want to take a camera with me, I tend to take my Canon compact digi. Lugging a kit bag with various lenses, camera and all th paranphanlia that goes with it can be a real ball ache.

I've also been offered a Canon EOS 20D and an Olympus E300 for around £70 each but having looked at them there about 12 years old now and with advances in technology I thought it wouldn't be the best option.

I already have one of these and even I was tempted by his offer as my shutter button is a bit iffy :rofl:

Difficult to be a golfer and a photographer, if you get right into it can become a very time consuming hobby/obsession.....just like golf .

These terrific landscape and wildlife shots you see from professionals are often staked out for hours to get just the right moment.

Have dabbled with decent SLR cameras down the years but will admit I couldn't quite get the compositions I was after or didn't have the skills/patience, will leave it to the experts and stick with a compact for general snapping.
