well, I've binned AVG and run smiffy's program - a lot quicker now

I may be misunderstanding (I hope so), but you have replaced AVG with another a/v program haven't you?

I've recently bought a new laptop and after years of AVG I'm now trying Avira after reading that AVG doesn't score particularly well in detection rate tests.

I hope so too! The program I have linked to isn't anti-virus software, it's just a utility to help get your PC up to speed.
I used to use AVG but got fed up with it ages ago and now use Avira. I have the "paid up" version on my PC but the free downloadble version is very good too.

Just stop clicking all those dodgy porn links Smiffy!

Even the best utility won't protect you if you keep clicking on "Yes, please install this porn onto my computer now"

My PC works fine with AVG, Zonealarm and CCleaner. Not had a virus in 5+ years.

Do you use Firefox as your browser? I'm wondering if AVG simply has issues with Firefox now that it has so many plugins. (I'm an IE user)

AVG is a pretty good anti virus, However on its default settings, it will do a full scan daily, now on an older PC this will slow things down to a crawl.

If your scan history shows consistantly no threats, then you can happily turn off the scheduled scan, AS LONG as you remember to run a manual scan every week or so.

Another program that is a great Anti Spyware killer is "Malwarebytes" www.malwarebytes.org it is also free.

It is also generally ok to use a registry cleaner maybe once every 6 weeks or so

I use glary utilities, CC cleaner is ok too,

You also need a software firewall. XP, Vista and W7 all have built in firewalls which are just about adequate. If you have a router, then this is also a hardware firewall.

If you have Norton or McAfee then you will have a firewall as part of the program.

Thus endeth todays lesson from "The Book According To Fragger"

thanks for the concern; I'm using Comodo which was recommended in an earlier post as being more compatible with Firefox.

1GB of RAM now installed - we shall see what happens next

You ought to see an improvement.

If I was building an XP desktop from scratch, I'd go for at least 1 gb, pref 2 gb.
a.t.m. I'm considering buying a barebone system with no O.S. or graphics/video/sound cards.
I'd like to use all my old "bolt-ons" and £1k of software before XP disappears for good (and PCI slots too).
512 can be OK for XP and 1gb for vista, but doubling up has always paid off for me.
