I'm going to the range tonight to try and cure it.

Can I have a list of suggestions please. I'm going to try everything possible, from grip to stance alignment.

It was quite depressing yesterday watching every drive curl spectacularly eastwards, I still managed to beat my partner by 10 shots in a strokeplay match. I got round a par 68 course in 89, I seriously think that if I could consistently drive straight-ish, I could shave about 10 shots of my round.

If you don't normally slice then it's probably just a bad timing day... body not working properly :)
Slicing can be exagerated if you're falling back off the shot or if your hands lag behind the club face, meaning that you fail to release the club properly.
Try not to lean off to the right too much on your backswing (keep weight more centered) and drive your hands through a little more with the grip of the club leading the way.

Always check your grip is normal and your posture and alignment are correct

Taking the club away to steep is a possibility.

Also releasing to early causing the clubface to be off-square (open) on impact.

Best thing to do if it becomes a habit is to go and see your pro for a bit of coaching.

I have had the same problem, I know exactly why I have don it when I slice so luckily I know how to correct it.

Good Luck

maybe its something simple....maybe your grips got a bit weak ...?? or your setup is wrong if you normally hit it straight and you have an off day its normally a quick fix!

I wouldn't be lloking at everything as that will only lead to confusion. My advice is to check the grip. If thats ok put a shaft parallel to the target (think train tracks) and make sure the shoulders hips and feet are all square. Check your swing path isn't too flat and you are coming over or you are pulling over the top in the transition.

I'd spend my time hitting balls at 80 power and stopping to check club positions and my basics. Hopefully it will click and as you go back to a full speed swing everything will work in synch. If the problem persists rather than self diagnose I'd get a quick lesson

Just a couple of ideas :

  • Left hand grip weak
Left hand grip ok. Right hand weak
    Grip too tight
    Stance open at address
Stance square, but hips open at address
Stance and hips square, but shoulders open.
Too much weight on your front foot at address
Ball too far back at address
Takeaway too much on the outside, leaving the club open at the top of the backswing
Takeaway too much on the inside leaving club nowhere to go on the downswing
    Reverse pivot
    Swaying on the takeaway
    Casting from the top
Sliding hips on downswing, rather than turning into the ball

That's pretty much most of my problems, anyway.

I'd be more tempted to ask a pro, myself.

:D

My slice was due to poor alignment in the fact I tried to aim my body left and club to target to compensate for any potential slice, hence causing it lol.

What i do with my girlfriend is get her to hit the driver off a really high tee which to hit the ball promotes a flatter angle of attack into the ball

No slice then she starts bombing it,quite fun seeing her put it past a few blokes playing off the same tee boxes

Can you video your swing so we can have a look? A slice or fade can be down to many things.

Very frustrating having a slice as off the tee you can get yourself into sooooo much trouble and you're off the back foot straight away.

Gustavo I dont think there is any substitute for getting someone to look at you (someone who knows what they are looking at,preferably a pro) as there are number of reasons I know that can cause a slice(Ive used several myself  :D)the worst slice is the one where you use more than one of these errors to conjour up your slice :D get a pro to look at you or send in a vid clip or two. ;)

Hence why its almost as well to line yourself up in the direction you are in danger of going. in this case to the right. Only problem is, that every now & again this ploy can backfire & a dreadful duck hook or a low pull... (Not nice)

Best solution is to work on alighnment & simply get it right. And sort out alighnment.

I believe Jack Nicklaus used to angle the club in the direction he wanted to go in flight at address, either turn left or turn right.

I once tried this from behind a tree when I was blocked out down the left hand side of the course. I aimed my body right into the fairway, virtually 90 degrees away from where I knew I wanted the ball to be going. But the face really closed on the club. Took a nice brisk 3/4 swing & the next thing, the ball is out into the fairway & then starts traveling left straight down the righthandside of the fairway towards the green & the ball went a good distance down the fairway too. Couldn't believe my eyes. Doubt I manage the shot again, but filed it away under... "shot added to armoury".

And they say you can't work the modern ball...Rubbish I say. Of course you can work & shape the flight of the modern ball.

Does the ball start straight then head off to the right or does it start left then go to the right.
Where do your divots point?

Hi Bob,

I'd say that most of the time, they start straight, but after a 1/3 of the flight, they shoot dramatically to the right, almost 90' !!! I tend not to create divots off the tee, but when I do they are slightly pointing to the left.

I think the club face is very open at impact, but can't find the source of why it is so.

Thanks for everyone suggestions. I'm going to have a few lessons with the local Pro, and see if I can be saved.

Another thought, I bought my driver off Ebay, should I have it looked at by my local Pro, to see if it's set up incorrectly for me and my swing ?? Just thinking of other excuses, bad workmen always blame their tools and all that !!!!!
