Got a call from sky earlier offering their insurance for £5.75 per month. Has anyone got it and is it worth it?
Cheers guys.

Don't they charge about £60 for a visit to repair a faulty box/dish. That's one repair a year going by what they are going to charge for insurance. You could also threaten to leave and then rejoin to get a new box.

And if it is after a year then you get three months warranty on top so why bother with it?

I've had a couple of these phone calls recently and I strongly suspect that they are not actually calling from Sky but are actually just some chancers touting for business. The wording that I got was "we are calling about your sky box". No mention that they were actually from Sky.

Like others have said, just wait until you get a fault and then call them. It's cheaper in the long run.

Am I right in thinking that without a working box, you can't watch the sky package you've paid for?

In my book, that means sky are going to want to fix you up or lose your custom. Seems to me, the customer is holding the cards.

Being a follower of technology (in general), I have been aware of problems with boxes.

Insurances for these types of things are dodgy i.m.o. They represent very poor value for money.

I received an offer today from these folk today for a blu-ray player.

£49 per year to protect a £109.99 product.

The payout ratio on extended warranties is 43% making it almost the worst value of insurance products.

Not for me.

I agree. So far (AW touches wood) (not like that.....) my SKY box has been OK but, if it were to break down, I'd insist that SKY repair it free of charge. Why should I pay for them to replace something that I need to view their product? No, I'd gladly leave before I paid any form of maintenence fee.

Anyway, isn't £60 a month a large enough maintenence fee? ;)

I've had those. I think I'll wait until something goes wrong and try the "I'm off" tactic and trying to get a free call out or new box

think ive had 3 or 4 boxes fail over 10 years or so, have never paid for a callout or the replacement box, they get plenty from me on a monthly basis, all the power is in your hands by threatening to leave (though you have far less bargaining if no cable where you live)

Funny thing is I got the same phone call about 2 months ago, told them I wasn't interested, so hung up.......3 weeks ago my viewing was not what is was meant to be. I phoned Sky up, the guy went through this and that, didn't make a difference. So he said he would send the guy out to sort it for me.
A week later the guy came out, found the problem got me to sign a form, I asked him about a charge, he replyed no. I gave him a 10er tip he went away very happy.

The box I have isn't a year old yet so maybe thats why there was no charge, I wouldn't take any insurance out any way.
If it breaks and they are going to charge me for some guy to come out and fix it, I wont be paying the monthly charge.
Whenever there is no golf on, there isn't much to watch anyway.

There is only one company that is officially authorised by Sky to repair their satellite equipment - Domestic & General. There are other companies that offer support and repair contracts, but they are not "approved" by Sky. I recently received a letter from Sky informing me of their fight with one such company (can't remember the name but I had used them a couple of years ago), they have taken them to court and are trying to get them wound up for selling themselves as official Sky repairs.

You can get a contract direct with Domestic & General for around £8 give or take, to cover any 4 entertainment systems including Sky box, TV, DVD player, Xbox 360, Hifi etc.

Obviously insurance is a risk, you could pay for years without any problems, and could offset the cost of not payig against buying something new in the event of breakdown, but you could need a couple of fixes at once when everything is out of warranty.....

My oven packed up last night (6 years old), I need to get it fixed before tomorrow, manufacturers engineer is £89 call out plus parts.. They offered me a years contract unlimited callouts/ repairs for £120 which would include this repair, with the payment spread quarterly, my response was ......sign me up!

There's a surprise (not) - Domestic and General.

This is the company that sends me insurance invites about 12 months after purchasing products.

I'm not anti-insurance exactly, but I do know how much money D&G make, and I have read the small print on some of their policies.

Buyer beware. There can be winners with extended warranties, but for the most part, they are rarely good value.

What winds me up the most is the type of policy where you effectively pay more than the item cost over a period of a few years, and then the small print allows the insurer to "write it off" at a small percentage of the original purchase price.
