Sky at your Club

We had it up until about 8 months ago. Its now been replaced with BTSport, which while good (Value for money) does not have the sporting coverage to attract people into the bar; its watched because its on.

Shame with Sky's monopoly of golf.

Yes my club does have Sky, the clubs owned by a hotel chain and I can only think they are getting some sort of deal from Sky because so many cuts have been made in other area's in recent years.

We ditched it a couple of years ago. The members voted it out at the AGM as it wasn't viewed as value for money.

I had no idea it was that expensive, I'd rather it was dumped and the money put into the club or course. Stick Blu-Rays on about the Ryder Cup or last years Open etc etc

Far too expensive. It is a golf club I'd rather the money went on a machine or some work on the course. There are a lot of pints in nearly 6 grand. People cannot stay to drink with drink driving laws. I do not think it is worth the cost.

we have it, hasn't been in long, on Saturday there having pay per view Froch v Groves, making a bit of a thing of it. A lot of the oldies don't agree, Hope it works out, just the £25 each way in a taxi puts the blockers on for me.

We have it - and the sports bar gets lot of use with sport always on - I reckon it is easy worth it but only because the club has a very active bar and social scene

My view is that it is worth it. Although it is not avidly watched all the time, it is popular when sport such as the 6 Nations in Winter, Ryder Cup (during the day this year at Gleneagles), etc. is on, then it is watched. Also, I have played in a few open comps or weekend comps during my time where the course has got flooded, and you end up in the clubhouse with many people watching the sport. Finally, my view is that a golf club is a "sports club", and, it has also been mentioned, that for approx £5-£10 a year, it is a service I would like to stay at my golf club.

So do we, but most want to chat amongst themselves, rather than watch West Brom play Stoke. I don't believe bar takings will go down by much, if at all. Problem is most golfers have to drive home so can't drink much any way. We don't all get taxi's home Paul.

Why not go down the route of installing an independent satellite and decoder, that way you can tune into any channel from the continent that is airing the channel you want.

If I remember rightly, there was a pub landlord that was doing it, sky took her to court and Sky Lost. I think it was around Sky refusing to be competitive and that they don;;'t own the air that the signal are transmitted through so they cannot stop a person receiving signal from free options.

Worth looking into

Just had an email from the Captain, asking the members to vote on keeping Sky. It is costing the club nearly £5,500 a year.

Do you have sky at you Club, and do you think it is worth the cost ? Personally I have voted to ditch it.

We have but it's paid for by the car park golfers - all the money that isn't spent by people over the bar from their card covers the sky costs

We have it. To be honest not sure we have that many ever watching it even for the golf. It'll be interesting to see what happens at the WC as they are pushing it hard but I doubt we'll get many.

WC isn't on Sky

WC isn't on Sky

Well done Sherlock. We don't get many watching the footie at the moment event though sky has most of the rights (bar PL on Saturday lunchtime) and we don't get many watching so MY POINT is I don't think they'll get many watching the WC even though they are pushing it hard irrespective of whether its on terrestrial or satellite

We have it but I doubt it would be missed if it went, rarely does anyone actually sit down to watch it and when they do it's often met with jeers from those who are looking up from their conversation. They advertise the celtic CL games because it's a bit of an old firm fortress in spite of being 150miles from glasgow, yet rarely get more than half a dozen and they all leave straight after.

Do you mind! I am a West Brom supporter! Seriously, my main objection to Sky is not only is it a very expensive subscription service, but you are still subjected to hours of adverts. I ditched my home subscription years ago. Our club does have it, so I can watch golf there if I want to, but Sky coverage is about 60% talking heads and adverts, and nothing like as good as BBC coverage.

I think it's easy to fall into the trap of evaluating everything on purely financial criteria to the exclusion of the less tangible benefits. We have Sky Sports and see it very much as part of the service we provide to members just like the snooker tables, the morning papers or even a television etc. It's part of what you get for being a member and adds to the overall package in helping to make the bar a more lively place to be with some atmosphere. This in itself means people are more likely to have a pint or bite to eat after a game even though they don't even watch TV. It's just a knock on of the place not feeling like a morgue......like so many golf clubs.

That said, the acid test is "do members watch it?" In our case, we are in town with a good catchment area of "locals". Saturdays we have a big group of maybe 30 guys who play afternoon all year round. A good 20 will stay to watch the evening match, have something to eat and a good few drinks. In summer, when there's no football they do the same, presumably it's just become routine. If we had no Sky Sports we'd lose not only their business down the road but the place would be dead and unlikely to attract anyone or make them stay on a bit longer. Basically the place is buzzing Saturday evening all year round and Sky Sports is a major factor.
