Skoda Yeti

I have a 11 year old Vauxhall Astra so will have to bite the bullet and get another car shortly been keeping my eye out for the last year and been asking advice from my brother Golfmmad who is knowledgable with cars, I have zero interest in cars but looking at something like a Rav 4 or similar, higher up from ground and good visibility is all I'm looking for really.

So today I hade a good look at the Skoda Yeti probably meets better than other cars all the requirements I need re higher and visibility.

But my word what a ugly car, now as I said cars are not my thing but even I couldn't be seen driving this ugly thing.

You ever drove one of these monstrositys Chris ?

Was given one as a hire car for a week. I sought counselling! Seriously though, it was fine as a run around town but it was just awful on the 2 hour motorway run to and from the airport.

When we moved over here we went for the Kia Niro. Its a hybrid. Typically returning low 60's mpg. Very comfortable on long runs. Plenty of room for back seat passengers, and will take 2 golf bags and trollies no problem.

Driven the Yeti loads of times and I have to say enjoy driving them. Very robust and well built too.
Ok they're not the best looking but very strong with a good engine.
I picked one up from a customer who said that she was glad to get her Kia Sportage back as the Yeti was very heavy, as she put it, to drive. I can understand what she meant as the Kia has a very light and cheap feel to it. But says a lot for the sturdy build and feel of the Yeti.

I bought one a couple of months ago for the other half and she absolutely loves it.

1.2 turbo charged engine with 7 speed DSG box its surprisingly spriteley and one of the most economical in its class. VW reliabilty as well.

Boot is massive and the rear seats come out for even more space. The high seating position is a must now for her as well.

It’s certainly quirky (ugly) but it’s been a very successful car for Skoda for a reason.

I had a 2.0d one when they first came out. Fabulous car. I had it for two years, did 36k miles, a mixture of country lanes and motorways. It did everything I needed and did it all superbly.

The outside was quirky and different, the inside was solid. The Karoq is rounder if the edges offend.

If anyone found the suspension tough then they need to check the tyre pressures. Over inflating really ruins the drive. Get it right and it has no problems, unless the petrol set up is different to the diesel.

Feel free to hate it, it has been a huge success for Skoda.

Perhaps the others need to do that to try and win back some market share? Besides some of these extended warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on.

Personally I think Skoda is a great compromise, German engineering but without the VW/Audi price tag.

My sister has had one, on my recommendation, for a couple of years and absolutely loves it.
She has the 1.2 and it's very economical and reliable. It has loads of room for her dogs and has quite a high seating position.
It's not pretty, but it's not as ugly as a Roomster!
Besides, she parks it outside her house when not in use and sits inside it when driving it ....................................... she actually doesn't spend much time looking at it.
For her it's more about reliability and economy than it is about aesthetics.

As one of the biggest sellers [worldwide] not sure Toyota need to boost their sales...
And, if their warranties weren't 'worth the paper they are written on' I'd think the press would be all over it...

They do, but they usually rattle for a while before they break, especially on start up.

Come on Roy, forget the ugly,it's just what you need up there in all sorts of extreme weather conditions. Don't forget they are also 4x4 drive as well. Although I can't help with the pro's and cons of 4x4 as I've never used it and not had the need to.

It's my recommendation, mostly for the conditions it will have to cope with up there!

Had one through work for a year and half, 2.0 SE I think which was a decent spec. Anyway boot space was too small but it handled really well, cornered like it's on rails. That stiffness in it makes it pretty sporty for superb handling. I liked my one and driving a hilux now which is a bit of a tank, I miss the drive of it, if not the lack of storage space, on these twisty Argyll roads.
4wd doesn't help with fuel economy but it makes for assured handling and got me places in the snow a 2wd would have failed at. Appreciate I'm in the wilds up here and not in Sidcup but for some the Yeti will work great.
