I spent half an hour on our new simulator last night (I believe it's a Foresight set up). I enjoyed it - playing 9 holes around Celtic Manor is a nice way to spend some time, but I was a bit suspicious of the results.

Before I played I went out for 9 holes on the actual course, and played very nicely - two over (10HCP) on hollow cored greens. I hit a couple of low ones, but mostly struck it well, with a strong straight ball flight.

On the simulator, every shot I hit was a hook or a strong draw. I wish I could hit shots like that, but I've been battling slice for years, and I know that I simply cannot hit shots like that.

I double checked alignment and set up, but could not straighten it out. It has certainly put me off spending any more money on there as I could start trying to fix faults that don't exist.

Anyone else experienced this?

I have had a few goes in the sim at Urban golf and found the ball flew as I expected.

Assuming that its the GC2 you were using, its literally the most accurate reflection of ball flight you can get.

you need to remember that GC2 does not take into account any weather conditions etc etc. So i would think that when you are on the course you are aiming incorrectly causing the slice, wheras on the GC2 the mat squared you up.

Yes.

Me and some mates are currently playing a Texas Scramble league over 6 weeks on GC2 and we are finding that the computer is showing altogether different flight paths of the ball compared to what we are seeing heading out into the range.

I struck a perfect straight drive last night right over the target pole, but the system showed I had hit a huge slice..

The guy who operates the computer says is is down to the software as the GC2 doesn't monitor actual ball-flight and gives optimal readings based on the enviromental conditions set in the software, as well as the usual swing path/face angle etc. He said a shot out into the range might be affected by wind/thicker air and so any spin may be negated, so we'll see differently to what GC2 shows as it doesn't take environmental conditions into account.

Never had any issues with flight path on a launch monitor but I hit it further than they report...... as I tell every pro who's ever put me on one....

How accurate would distances be on a GC2 with HMT at reading distances struck with an iron, hitting range balls?

It should accurately reflect the ball used, as i've practiced with a number of different balls to see which ball i should be using.

Mark Crossfield used GC2 HMT to test the spin characteristics of the new Chrome Soft recently.

I was fitted on GC2 HMT on Tuesday and was told that it didn't matter than they were range balls, that the distances reflected normal golf balls.

It was odd because I was seeing longer distances than I would ever expect from a range ball.

I believe 'not 100%' that you can set it up to account for the reduction in distance a range ball would be. you can 100% do that on trackman as the user can 'normalize' a shot.

As I understand it it is measuring the spin, ball speed, launch angle etc at and immediately after impact. It then extrapolates these results to a ball flight. So I would imagine a Pro V1 would behave differently to a range ball in this aspect if you hit exactly the same shot. So you would get different results. Might be wrong though.

Crossfield always emphasizes he used 'his gaming ball' when he does the tests using GC2. Also I do my lessons on a GC2 and the pro told me is it best to use 'proper balls'

yep, went to a fitter and was hitting into a sheet in front of me, trackman reported duck hooks, pull hooks and low pulls.

Normal flight is draw to a fade.

I put it down to mental blocks over hitting into a sheet with no 'real' feedback which changed my swing.

Funny, its the other way with me. I've been on quite a few LM's for club fittings and I tend to hit the ball better (straighter) on the LM than I do on the course. Probably something to do with not having a real target to aim at so I just hit the ball on the LM rather than over think things :o

AP1Fitting.JPG

These were the results I got from a fitting for Titleist AP1s, I was very happy with the increase over my previous clubs, but not there's a tiny seed of doubt that the results aren't accurate.

Got me thinking..
I was lucky enough to get to hit the 915 with access to a LM and a fitter and he made some recommendations based on hitting, what looked like good quality, Srixon range balls. Now should I order one to his specs or do I get checked out again with "my" ball?
Having seen the difference one Stiff shaft produces against another stiff option I am interested to find out the differences a Pro V1x would produce.

I had my lesson on Trackman today and we ended up testing a few of the balls for spin it was interesting.

Basically we've been trying to lower my dynamic loft and spin with a 7 iron. My swing has improved so we started testing the balls at end of lesson.

Pro v1x and Z star were best for me spinning around the same rate, the nike black was high spinning and the ad333 wasnt right due to launch I think.
