I was trying to remember a drill I did 10+ years ago with short irons. I've searched under closed face drill and shut faced drill and found almost nothing. I found this though

"take a middle or short iron and grip the club so the face is severly closed. Now make half to 3/4 swings and try to hit the ball straight or with a slight fade. It will force you to hit the ball as late as possible (hitting late opens the face while releasing early shuts it)."

i.i.r.c. it got me de-lofting the face and getting my hands further in front at impact....
It gave me quite a distance boost.....

I just can't remember all the details.
:)

Good drill that one you must be like me drill mad,i use something simaliar to that one and one to get me a good realease

Set up as normal that turn till my back facing the target then swing gets the clubhead catching up with the rest of me,

Gotta love the drills

I have found my self with the hands to far forward of late so I shall pass on this one. Although I do need something for distance!

Gotta love the drills

For me, anything which gets you "trying to do something" with the swing in between balls is basically a drill.

After warming up (includes two club swings/feet together/izzo strap etc.) I settle into 1 or 2 specific things. Without the drills, I'd mindlessly hit balls.

I remember the improvement after doing this shut face drill for 3 or 4 sessions......I just wish I could exactly get my head around it. Maybe I'll just do it tomorrow and see if the physical memory sets in.

I do remember hitting 140-150 yard 9 irons!! I think it does something good once you can stop hooking the ball!!

I found another reference to this drill.

" Easy......I.M.O. the absolute BEST drill for a player with reasonable fundamentals/pivot is the "shut face" drill......take a 7 iron......set up normally except you've shut the face a bit.......make 3/4 swings and try and hit the ball straight or with a slight fade.......in order to do so you MUST create some LAG and DELAY the clubhead which keeps the face open a bit longer and also forces the player to work the butt of the club left with his body.......when you can successfully hit the ball straight (slight draw or fade) you'll see on video from a face on that the "flip" is gone.......from down the line you'll see the butt work left with your body and the club release left alla Hogan/Snead/Price, etc. etc. etc......GREAT drill for casters/flippers as there is NO way to hit the ball straight if you manipulate the face one iota........do NOT make full swings.......just 1/2 to 3/4 shots.......however, you CAN hit the ball H A R D once you get the hang of it.......it's also a GREAT wind shot to learn (just don't close the face as much at address, but, swing the exact same way........keeps the ball down and the flight boring......straight too........"

Ringing any bells??

Real are you a fan of slicefixer.

I guess so, I didn't spend much time mooching around the site, just looking for the quote really.
Is it another forum.....have I been unfaithful?? :)

I might try this drill in the week, I am desperate to create more lag as I would really like to add some distance to my shots.

I know distance isn't important but it would help with the 7000 yards I have to navigate each week.

Does the drill help to keep the face open later so I wont hook it?

what happens when I master it and set up normal, wont i just leave the face waaaaay open?

Well, I got into the drill in no time at all and was hitting 160 yd 8 irons in less than a dozen balls.
Very few hooks, mostly rapier-like. Great, so I couldn't be flipping or casting and I must have been getting my hands in front of the ball? Probably, but...

Ended the session with a few 3 woods and drivers...

Disaster.....190 yard punch shots with my G5 Driver.....yuk.

So, as ever, find something GOOD and pay the price with something BAD at the other end of the club range.

Me-thinks another session tomorrow to go back to normal.

ARGHH...GOLF!
