Has anyone seen the HSBC first round highlights on the homepage? Nice to see Mickelson shouting fore. We've had quite a few letters recently on the subject of pros not seeming to do what all club golfers are encoraged to do.

With his driving you would get used to doing it

It does seem to be almost beneath some pros to admit they've hit a stinker and shout fore. To be fair most caddies seem happy to bellow some kind of warning. I know we are told to get golf insurance to protect us but I wonder if it will ever come to a stage where someone gets hit at a pro event and sues the player for damages

Apparently, if a player shouts,"Fore", after an errant drive and it hits another golfer, then he cannot be sued, as a warning was given. Don't know if that's the case in the pro game.

You're probably right Homer - but the conversation in the clubhouse the other week was that the Judge/Magistrate said, "Had you not shouted the words fore, the case would be going against you". Or words to that effect. Maybe it was a case of how the judge was feeling on the day :( :D

I stand corrected then. Although the statement mentions, "Household insurance", does it apply the same for golf insurance?

In April 1998, The Court of Appeal upheld a County Court ruling that "Golfers are liable for shots that cause injury, no matter how slight the risk", and a cry of Fore! will not absolve you from responsibility. So, with many golfers wrongly believing they are covered under their household insurance, one erratic swing could leave them in financial ruin.

I was looking up golf insurance a few weeks ago and remember coming across this statement

Question is, if Ross Fisher is on the tee, bombing it 340 yards, will you hear him shout if you are in the landing area? May be this is why they don't bother.

Sorry Golfmad this is not true.

Was at the Dunhill links at Carnoustie standing at the 17th tee watching Huey Lewis (Wife is a fan!!)We were just left of the 16th green with our backs to the 16th tee when a ball whizzed past my ear and bounced just five feet away from me and ran across the 17th tee. I turned round and saw Pablo Larrazábal and his caddie standing there holding out there left arms. What use was that when we were facing away from him? Huey Lewis went way up in my estimation when he had a few choice words for him. His playing partner Nick Dougherty was equally disgusted and said it was becoming a problem with many pros in the game.

Even if the players are hitting it 340 yards, if they shout the marshals have an idea where it's headed and spectators can take evasive action. I've seen some nasty injuries of late and I'm not sure the glove by way of an apology makes up for the pain!

I'm intrigued by the crowds that gather when a pro is playing a punch shot from one of the more exotic parts of the course. They seem to form a kind of tunnel which the player has to shot through. Now, I appreciate the pros are highly skilled and 99 times out of 100 they'll nail the shot and no-one will be injured but there's still that one time where a cheeky shank appears and some poor sod takes one right between the eyes...... :o

Lol yeah I agree with this. I always think the exact same as you. A violent shank left because of a nasty lie or something would really injury somebody x

As I said earlier in the thread, do you think it will ever come to the stage where a spectator at a pro event gets hit by a 340 yard drive and hasn't heard the warning (if any shouted) and then sues the player for damages. I have a sad feeling that surely its got to happen on the PGA or LPGA sooner rather than later given their litigious tenedencies and once that Pandoras box is open where will it end.

If I was hit in the head by a golf ball at any event, say then I ended up with brain damage, couldnt work for a number of years then had to live on £70 sick pay from the government, you really think I wouldnt sue??

If I was hit by a ball that caused serious damage I would in no doubt sue them.

Hang on - the pro would give you a nice new glove and, perhaps, some new balls - that'd be compensation enough me thinks.........
