Racked up a very poor 29pts in todays Stableford, played like a dog all the way round. The biggest and most destructive problem of my round though was putts from 5ft and in. Missed too many to mention that cost me at least 6 points. Soul destroying. Putts from longer distances I was lagging nicely, but those left in that short distance were killing me, unless they were 12-18inch tap ins.

So, any advice/tips/guidance that you guys can give on improving my technique from this pithy distance? Hitting GIR then 3 putting makes me want to cry. I am a grown man.

I had a similar issue last season and I have 2 bits of advice for you.

1) don't be tentative. You have to be positive with putts from this range.

2) practise. The best way to get confident with putts from this range is to hit as many of them as you can.

Our medal winner today missed a 2 inch putt, left it 1 inch short!

I know because I was marking his card!

TBH he putted poorly all the way round, I have since introduced him to the V-Easy and he is ordering one soon!

His putts never rolled out, my pro always says a well struck putt is the aim, it improves the most important thing... Pace judgement!

Even if a putt misses, as long as I hit it well I am rarely going to three putt, it either finishes close or the next one goes it.

We've all been there! Couple of things have worked for me:

1) Focus on a spot about an inch or 2 in front of your ball and just focus on rolling the ball over that spot
2) Work on a putting routine. The aim is to go into "automatic" mode, so you're just focused on executing your routine, not worried about making/missing the putt.

Good luck!

Break out the V-Easy and practice, practice, practice. I know that's what I need to do. Putting was hopeless today. 3 putted two GIRs and 4 putted another, plus couldn't buy a one putt all day so scrambling just wasn't there. I played fairly nicely the rest of the round, but became a quivering wreck once on the green.

I have found that a putting stroke that removes as much unnecessary movement of the arms and wrists really helps to lower stats.

This is what helps me:

I tried an old drill this week on practice green I put 5 tees as markers in a circle 3 ft around the hole in the aim to hole 20 3footers in a row if I missed start again. Easy I thought an hour later the best I did was 16 twice I couldn't believe . Weather this helps I don't,t know but it proved not all are gimmes

Thanks for the replies chaps. Just orders a Superstroke 2.0 grip, in the meagre hope that might help. No substitute for practice, practice, practice.

If you are missing them left, the chances are you're moving your lower body/hips.
Try this drill.
Stand with your rear against a chair/wall and make your stroke keeping equal pressure on both cheeks against the chair.
If your hips turn, you will feel the pressure change and miss left.
That should give you the feeling of keeping the lower body still,
