Hi

anyone recommend a book/website to hep high handicapper

really struggling at the moment and just want a very basic technique to start with.

will be joining a club in the summer and so will get some lessons with the pro there but want to enjoy the few rounds I have before then and this is stopping me.

thanks

Am sure there are hundreds of books and videos to see on you tube. Most of which will be mentioned at some point during this blog. but I think the answer to your question is not one of your suggestions. Have a lesson.
you mention you are on about joining a club, use having a lesson to suss out one you may have in mind. Unless you already know where your going.
When I started I had a block of five lessons covering differant aspects of the game. Short game was one of them. It covered everything from chipping with 7 iron through to wedges, where to land the ball etc etc. It is a minefield.
Also ring around a few courses and see if they have " roll ups", basically just turn up, pay a ?fiver and have a lesson. An excellent cheap way of learning differant aspects of a frustrating game 👍
Good luck from another Mr C😁

Lesson is definitely the way to go. I tend to think there are only a few things that go wrong with a golf shot, left, right, slice, hook, fat or thin. Unfortunately thes can be caused by a million and one things that can't always be picked up by the player so you tube is not the way to go. Get a pro to have a look and see what exactly what is going wrong

My bible for many, many years is "Getting up and down" by Tom Watson. Lots of line drawing rather than photo's, which I find easier to understand. You can pick it up from Amazon for less than £2.

Get a lesson then practice on grass, not a range mat

Definitely this ^

I spent the winter practicing off range mats and went out to play 9 for the first time on Sunday and my short game was terrible as I just couldn't adjust back to hitting off grass

As a fellow new golfer I struggled to find a reliable short game technique.

Tried lot of different things, but eventually found something that has now made short game the strongest part of my game.

Even going in a bunker doesn't phase me anymore.

All about using the bounce, letting the club head flip at impact and keeping the right arm moving after impact.

The information is out there for free, something about this video helped it to click for me.

Not read other posts but YouTube is great for information, dave pelz is pretty good at giving fail safe pitching/chipping techniques. Whatever you do though I'd say firstly a pro is the best way to go and also if you don't work at it or practice a new technique it's very unlikely your problems will ease with a band aid tip

thanks for all the replies everyone.I am joining a club in June. I have a couple of options for clubs but as part of joining I am going to sign up for a batch of lessons with the pro there. I feel this is a good way of helping me integrate into the club which is why I dont want to have the lessons now.The idea of practicing on grass is really good. seems so obvious now its been said but I do just go to the range at the moment. Although taken 10 balls over for field would be a better option and cheaper.

Totally agree, was shooting decent scores during Winter using a Winter Rules mat, came to actually playing off of grass and my short game disappeared and striking was poor. Spent some time on the practice area this week and noticed a difference already, back tonight hopefully.

Sorry to butt in on your thread but I was going to ask similar. Our practice area is grass, very open but also with bunkers etc towards the top of the area. It's not perfect but a good area for practice.

Rather than picking the best section of grass to hit from would you try replicate the course and just throw balls down and have a target (distance wise for each club) and hit wedges/9/8 irons to the target? Is 5/10 balls for each club better than just hitting 25/50 balls for say a PW?

Hit as many as as you like. Times ill spend ages with sand and lob then spend some time playing runners with lower lofted clubs.

The more you hit the better. If u can aim at multiple targets its better than hitting the same shot all day.

Jason dransfield set up some great games last year that you can test yourself on. Will have a look later and post them up.

Mulitple targets is a good idea and the bump and runs are good around my course at times so will get some practice in on them too. Cheers Gary
