Short game coach.

I will give you some coaching on chipping if you like? I can tell you everything you need to know in 5 minutes and I am not trying to be flippant or immodest.

After that, you need to practice an awful lot as unfortunately, there are no real short cuts to becoming very proficient at chipping in golf.

From an exchange with Gareth last May.....

When I see people with chipping woes, invariably the cause is the backswing being too long leading to varying degrees of deceleration through impact.

As a solution, perhaps try this - take your pitching wedge and have your hands slightly forward (2-3 inches) of the clubface. Play the ball from the middle of your narrow stance. Think of the stroke as a long putt with not too much backswing and plenty of follow through. Make sure you see the club hit the ball. Try this with a 9 iron or sand iron until you get the trajectory and roll that you prefer then stick with it. And remember to focus on the spot you want the ball to land rather than the pin.

I was taught this method as a child by a professional that could chip like God and it has always been a good way of chipping under pressure for me. Not much can go wrong with this method as the wrists are quiet and the mechanics are simple.

Hope this helps.

Decent advice being given out by an unqualified person over the internet!! WTF is the world coming too!!

Technique sounds simple and effective lord snelly, will give that a bash too!

I use Steve Mitchell who is based at Etchinghill in Folkestone, although I know he can teach all over Kent. He looks after all the County sides- his real strength is short-game though. He really helped Benn Barham with his pitching when he was on tour. Uses the TOMI analysis software for this putting. Great guy too- as an ex-pro myself, he has helped me fine tune my short game to another level......email is stevem@pentlandgolf.co.uk if you want to get in touch.

The pro at my last club got me gripping down the club and standing more upright to the ball, I never felt comfortable with this.
Would you suggest taking a normal stance and is the stance open or square ?

Thanks Sandy, wonder if he'll come up to one of the pentland courses nearer me ;)

In the event of Snelly's advice not working!

I gave been to Paul Page at Kings Hill for coaching this last year and have really been happy with him and his methods. I have cut 3 shots off my handicap too

Does anyone NOT advocate using the same club when chipping?

You should be able to chip with most clubs in the bag if you want to be proficient. Depending on the shot you want to achieve at the time. Most links players with no doubt be excellent with anything from a 7 iron up to a 60 degree.

For the record most modern coaches are teaching chipping and pitching with a more up right angle using the natural loft of the club and neutral ball position rather than the older hands in front of the club face style.... Prevents digging, de lofting and catching it fat.. Im currently in transition....:p
