Shanks!!!!!!!

I get it every now and then with my wedges when I am trying the play a delicate shot inside 100 yards. I had a string of it the other week and hit 8 shanks on the bounce on the range before I went out and played. This resulted in me being without a Gap wedge for my round.

TBH, there could be a number of reasons for Shermans. i would go see a pro and let them sort it out. getting a load of tips for it might just cause a different problem.

This. I know my primary cause is getting the weight forward on the downswing but it's not my only reason for them and a pro will recognise what you're doing in a few minutes and get you sorted. With so many potential reasons it's a bit hit and miss in my mind at least to try and work out which one is the cause

Did you ever get round to having that "second set of eyes" lesson with a differnt pro.

Rory's shank out of the bunker on Saturday, which led to a double, effectively ended his Masters challenge. He's not alone when it comes to shanks ending a players major hopes though as DJ for one will testify when a last round shank OOB cost him the Open a few years ago.

With all the excitement I completely forgot about that :)

I agree 100% - and yes - my pro spotted my problem immediately. He stood behind me on the practice ground and told me to hit 6 balls with a 6i. I hit 6 straight shanks. His words were 'yes - you do have a serious problem but I know why you are doing it'. And within 30mins he had me hitting the ball again - with the correct bit of the club.

I would never have been able to work it out myself, and as it was not down to a common reason I have never seen it mentioned as a root cause of the unmentionables.

Update on my situation. Played Tuesday night...shot 81. Nothing near the hosel.

Lesson tonight - hit shots the pro asked me to, on demand. Went out and played 4 holes with him with a better thought process in my head, and no sign of them.

Hopefully, they have moved on!

Hopefully...but do not drop your guard - keep focussing on what your Pro has told you to do. Because as soon as you do not and you become complacent you risk dropping straight back into doing what was causing you the problem.

Though I was given 'the cure' for mine nearly two years ago, I must still concentrate every shot on what my Pro told me to do. As soon as I don't - and if I become complacent into thinking that I am sorted - then I am close to 'doing one' - my swing was that grooved.

I will be trying. His tip was basically stop seeing everything as a straight shot. Hit everything with a shape. When I concentrate on that, I seem to swing with a better tempo, and inevitably get the desired result. In the lesson he was telling me before I hit a shot to hit a high draw, low draw, high cut, low cut and I was able to do it straight away, which impressed me. Got me thinking that maybe I can actually play this game!!

delusion - a bedfellow of complacency ;)

I have the same thoughts and then step onto the first tee and it proves me wrong again

2 horrors today from right in the middle of the fairways, something I've never really experienced before, and I don't want them any more!

Both with longer irons, 5 & 4 but I was also right in the heel on quite a few drives!

Something has crept in and I don't like it 😡

Hope it's a one off but I find that when I go through a phase (fortunately not for a long time now) it's like Russian roulette waiting for the next one. If you get them in the next round (and I seriously hope you don't) get a pro to see what's going on

I've had them for the last 2 weeks, awful feeling it got so bad I was even thinking about not playing, couldn't even chip it 10 yards without shanking one, anyway went up the practice ground yesterday with a big block of wood, don't laugh I was desperate, put the ball next to the wood ( how close to the wood depends on how brave your feeling) and just started chipping missing the wood, worked my way from 10 yard chips to pitching 40,50 yards, eventually took the block of wood away and bingo, got the feeling of getting the toe of the club to the ball first ( you don't actually but after hitting everything out of the Hozzle that's what it felt like) played today and didn't even think about it, simple drill but guarantee it'll work...they'll go as quick as they came..keep at it

This helped me however I brought a smash bag and used that. Also concentrated on my takeaway as it was very handy and inside. Since I changed that over 12 months ago I've had no issues.
