seniors

I am happy to play with our seniors. Most of them are decent chaps and still play a good game especially from 100 yards in. But, there is also a large senior section that is a law unto themselves and ultra cliquey. More chance of getting in the Masons. They do seem to tar the majority with their brush.

That whine aside, many are still playing comps off the whites regularly. Some prefer the yellows and nothing wrong with that. The club have given them the option of a forward tee on the only hole with a significant carry and so they have that option too. At the end of the day, all these keyborard thumping about who could beat who off what handicap is nonsense. Either get the matches on and invite the forum down for the day or respect the views of others and live and let live

hi

what does the forum members thinks of forward tees for seniors/ just a thought

short off the tee

One problem with forward tees is that due to the way css is calculated higher handicappers arguably benefit greater from forward tees (wouldn't be the case if that's the tees they always played off, in which case someone playing usually of further back tees would have an advantage).

I don't dislike the idea of tees and ratios of handicaps talked about on the continent, though it is theoretical to me and I am not sure of how it works in practice.

I tend to feel robbed if I don't play a full course and would welcome the chance to always play from the back tees.

Not quite sure of your thinking. For comps to be qualifiers they would have to be over a measured course and, if so, I cannot see how higher handicappers would have an advantage.

I think the whole point of a competition is that you play the same course as everybody else, otherwise isn't a fair competition. It's like you getting a start and finish for a marathon and just getting to the getting to the end as quickly as you can finds the winner.

As for general play you should be able to play from wherever you want to. Why shouldn't I be allowed to play off the women's tees if I want to play a shorter course that day? Or challenge myself from the very back tees if I happen to be in a confident frame of mind

Because courses are rated for scratch golfers not bogey golfers.

I'd argue that shortening courses tends to favour the bogey golfer more than the scratch golfer.

So if players handicaps are gained in the main off back tees, then those with more shots get more of an advantage when playing forward.

The yellows would have a different SSS to the white so its still fair.

my course for instance White is 6500 is SSS is 73, yellow is 6100 and the sss is 71.

you have to play to the CSS or SSS which will or should be different

Thanks again Phil, once again you've saved me from getting into troubled waters. Perhaps a pair of the Big Yins incontinence plus fours would be dapper [damper]

Hi guys

After quite a few years of lurking I have decided to take the plunge in this thread.

I was lucky enough to play a couple of rounds at Bayhill a few weeks ago and they have an intermediate tee there that is half red and half yellow. They call it the Combo tee and is just over 6,200 yards compared to the yellows that are just under 6,500 yards. Apparently that is the preferred tee of a lot of the members.

For handicap purposes then yes, but if it was a medal and you and your mate both went round in say 80, playing off the same handicap, but one off the White tees and one of the Yellow, how do you decide who won?

If it was a medal you would all have to play off the tee selected that day. You can't all play off different tees.

Ok, say we are the same handicap 6
Both shoot 80

Off the white I shoot 80 SSS would be 73 , so I have 74 and buffer and one over SSS

Off the yellow 80 , SSS 71, so 80 74 3 over and up 0.1 and 3 over SSS .
