Secret to the short game..

Decide firstly whether you want to play a low shot, a medium shot or a high shot.
This will be dictated by the lie, the slopes, the amount of green you have to play with, the softness/hardness of the green, obstacles, wind etc etc.
Once you have decided on the shot and a club, look for a spot where you want to land the ball and have a few swings feeling how long the backswing and through swing need to be for the length of shot.
Then commit to the shot.
If the backswing is too long, you will more than likely decelerate into the ball causing the duff.
So keep the backswing a little shorter which will allow you to be positive with the downswing.
And practice
:)

Blimey Bob - that's even longer than my silly idea :)

I (for the first time i'm embarrassed to admit!) learnt how to get back spin onto the ball this morning, meaning my 56 degree wedge stops where it lands and i can get it to come back if needed, this is going to change my short game rather massively, as i always had to allow room for the ball to roll upon landing on the green...

If you're getting backspin and the ball is coming back on "short game" shots, I think you're in trouble!? :)
Aren't you talking about wedges and stuff....or are you pulling off shots that nobody has ever seen on the Tour?

Anyone else notice that when you pitch past the flag the ball releases and when you pitch short you get 10 feet of backspin.....

Or is it me..?

All the time :-) I refer to this as amatuer back spin as although it looks good it actually is a worse shot as you are now further away from the flag :-)
