So we have a thread about drivers, but how about where the shots are really saved.. the short game!

I (for the first time i'm embarrassed to admit!) learnt how to get back spin onto the ball this morning, meaning my 56 degree wedge stops where it lands and i can get it to come back if needed, this is going to change my short game rather massively, as i always had to allow room for the ball to roll upon landing on the green...

So what's your secret to the short game..

1) Correct assesment of the situation. I.e. Lie, obstacles in the way, how much green you have to work with leads to the correct assesment of the club and shot type.
2) Apply the correct technique.
3) After the shot, go tap it in (assuming it missed!).

And move onto the next.......

Woosey, fancy sharing with us how you manage to get backspin on it?

The key to it in my opinion is pick your shot, be confident and attack it. Dont be tentative under any circumstances.

Hey Guys,

Re: back spin (and pro's feel free to correct me, this is just what i 'feel' when doing it..)

The scenario today was a pin 70 yards away from me. Take your nice wedge (my 56 for me) and for me it's a 3/4 swing, however when starting the down swing really feel your accelerating your lower half and turning through the ball, rather than using your arms - this made me really hit into the ball causing the spin.

i was gob smacked when i saw the ball just sit down on the 2nd bounce, or if i really went at it, spin back past where it pitched - it's something completely new to me!

I must say my wedge is pretty new, but i was also using the srixion range balls!

Short ones don't drop. Try to sink the chip. If it doesn't go, sink the first putt. Practice, practice, practice.

Good luck with that, I'll stick with a bit of release, much easier to control than backspin in my opinion and helps when I don't carry it far enough :D

My short game has improved as a result of played a few holes with the club pro, simply by now keeping my wrists still when playing the shot, I just need to judge distance better now.

Practice, feel and confidence work best for me. When I have these I'm surprised at how good my chipping can be. I don't buy into the need to hit a shot with so much back spin the ball is spinning back across the green. I think it leaves you open to swinging too fast. A consistent shot and a feel for the distance is far more useful for me. I always feel I have a chance to score well when my short game is working well. I can't say the same for my long game!

Ball about 2 inches outside back foot
All weight on left
Close club face on way back
Flick wrists at top of back swing and at teh same time transfer about 85% of weight onto other foot
Do NOT move your head at this point
Open face on way down, but very gradually
Try and flick the face of the club between the bottom of the ball and the ground, feeling that the face is horizontal as you do it
Make sure that the wedge faces circa 20 to 30 degreess off to the right through impact

Apart from those simple tips, it;s all in the mind
