Anyone got one of these? At that time of year when people are going to ask me what I want for birthday/xmas and a new winter hat might well be on my list

Do you mean a beanie style hat? I do own a waterproof beanie (not Sealskinz) but it was just like a plastic bag inside a knitted hat really, and it made my head sweat so much that the 'waterproofness' was somewhat pointless. 😄

The old ones are better, without the plastic bit in between layers - you can get V1 and V2, go for V1 - think Amazon has them.

V2 is like playing with a bag of Walkers on your head.

I’d avoid Seal Skinz hats or Gloves. They are waterproof yes but they don’t wick water away from the surfaces of the glove or hat. It tends to sit and bead on them which causes the to lose a lot of heat so whilst your hands or head are dry it’s bloody freezing.

There are some decent brands out there for cheaper that will allow the water to run away and not make you freeze. I hate to admit but if your on a budget in this regard the waterproof bucket hat suggestion is best. It will allow the water to run off at all angles and keep you drier.

Edit; best bet head to go outdoors they do some excellent goretex hats that will cost a lot less than sealskinz or gold specific brands. But if you want something that’s the dogs danglies find yourself a plain black winter Polar cap by a brand called Keela. It’s not cheap but they’re phenomenal.

That’s why I’d suggest avoiding them it’s the new ones that don’t bead properly and the plastic makes you cold as it holds the water in the in between layer.

First I’ve heard of it, good brand?
Very good. I've got two pairs of their waterproof socks and they work brilliantly. Absolute game changer in winter, you don't worry about whether your shoes are waterproof or whether to go into longer grass looking for a ball.

In terms of hats, I have a Sunderland waterproof bucket hat. It works well but as @Orikoru has mentioned your head does sweat with it on. I only wear it when it's really chucking it down. I suspect the Sealskinz version is similar. I'd have confidence in it's waterproof ability, it's what they do.

Their socks are superb as they’re designed to breath but the gloves and hats are nowhere near the same level.

Can't comment on the waterproof aspect but can confirm Keela are a pricey brand. They do some of our work gear and the prices are eye-watering

I've had the bobble hat that they still sell for a couple of years. Waterproof, breathable, warm and comfortable. Worn it in all weathers and have found it excellent.
Currently on my second pair of their waterproof winter gloves. Also excellent. The first pair lasted 10 years. I've had the current pair for about 5.
I don't buy their waterproof socks anymore though because they do feel like a carrier bag sandwiched between 2 badly fitting socks.
Geckowear are way more comfortable.

You can get a Polar cap for £24. That’s waterproof, warm and breathable. But if you want the real Gucci stuff it’s lots of pennies. Think my hat was about £85 but I claimed it back from work 🤣

If you want the really good and expensive stuff go for Carinthia you might need to remortgage the house though 😳

Thanks for the replies everyone

I did indeed mean like a beanie or a bobble hat. That's what I'm after mainly - the waterproofness was another additional benefit that I thought might be useful.

As for those other monstrosities like these "cap" things from Keela etc - I'd sooner give up golf entirely than be seen out in one of those. Jesus.

Fashion over function! I’d rather be warm and dry but 🤷🏼

I actually find them much better. Sealskinz were bulkier and used to make my feet sweat. Geckowear are less bulky, more flexible and seem to be more breathable.
The thin socks I wear under them are always bone dry.
Interesting to hear, in case I ever need to replace my Sealskinz socks. Why do you wear socks underneath them?

I have one of the monstrosities that looks like the sort of thing a North Sea trawlerman might wear.

It might look daft but, as well as keeping my head dry, it keeps the rain off my glasses and stops it running down the back of my neck.
