How did you get on Robin?
What did you think of it?

Yep, come on Robin, I've been wondering whether its worth going over for and tieing it in with a knock on Woodhall (its no. St.Mellion).

It was excellent

It was a tad windy but dry when I arrived, I had a great full breakfast after a good couple of hours drive, all very friendly and for a Sunday morning I couldn't believe how quiet it was, I think we only saw a couple of 4-balls tee off in the 90 minutes before we all tee'd off.

Played off the yellows (tees of the day) and to be honest on a first visit that's all you want, no need making it tougher than it needs to be. I hit a solid drive down the first just short of the fairway bunkers, decent 2nd shot but caught the bank on the right and didn't get a favourable bounce so had to chip on, single putt for par, great start

Again I hit a solid drive to what looked like a dogleg, there was no need to attempt to cut any corner, I saw a couple try it in the group upfront and all of them were in rough, I only had about 145 yards to the raised green but it looked small and narrow, I caught the right side of it and it rolled down towards the 3rd tee block, to the amusement of the lads stood on it, I tried to lob my shot up but it went too far into a little roll-off trench on the other side of the green, delicate chip back and a 3-putt on a very quick green resulted in a blob :(

I think the 3rd was the blind tee shot, I remembered what you all said and drove to the left of the marker and came to rest just before the bunker on the upslope, a nice little lob wedge up and 2-putt and the pars were on song again.

This pattern of pars and a couple of blobs carried on for the front 9 resulting in me turning on 19 points :D

The back 9 I struggled a bit more on, we were now into the wind and the difference was frightening, even though you hit your drives well and low, they just didn't go anywhere and everything became 200+ yards into the greens and still into wind! I started to find far too many bunkers going for them so I switched my play to playing short of the hazards and then looking to chip close with hopefully a bogey being a worse case scenario, it came off sometimes but another 2 blobs on the back meant only 12 points and 31 in total, which in the grand scheme of things on a tough course for the first time in testing conditions, I was pleased with.

The Crown hotel we stayed in just 50 yards from the course was OK, a bit dated and basic but nice a cheap, but they looked after us very well, the food was excellent and the beer was cheap, so cheap I ended staying up until after 2am with 4 others having a session on Port

I was a bit delicate in the morning, a good breakfast and back on the tee, got a good drive away but started with a bogey, and again I blobbed the 2nd, that friggin hole is a nightmare!

The wind was getting up and we knew a storm was heading towards us and the sky was starting to look scary. I turned on 15 points blobbing the same 2 holes but double bogeying a few others, especially the par 3's, I just couldn't get to grip with any of the par 3's, I was 3 off the tee with 3 of them, the cross wind was lethal and I couldn't hit a low shot to the required distance they were without the wind taking them off OOB :(

I battled on but as we were stood on the raised 18th tee the heavens unloaded on us, a force 10 gale hit us with hail & rain so hard and forceful I thought I was being shot blasted, I was glad we were the 3rd group out, there were another 3 groups behind us getting battered longer. I still got a decent drive away which the wind helped bring back to the right hand dogleg, but it took another 2 x 4 woods and an 8 iron to get to the green, you could hardly stand up never mind swing a club, I reached the green like a drowned rat, 2-putts for a point and finish with a total 27 points, I was knobbled with the Port

I loved the course, just as you think you've got it mustered on the front the back is so different if the wind is up, the undulating fairways were excellent and the greens very fast and true, the bunkers were a nightmare with natural beards and very deep faced and always cost you at least a shot, all-in-all I'd go back in a heartbeat but I need to learn how to tackle some of their par 3's.

We had 2 rounds of golf over 2-days and accommodation with breakfast for £120, I upgraded to a single on arrival for just another £15
