Scotland v Croatia

Yes a shallow victory as Croatia had already qualified and didn't want any injuries or any red/ yellow cards. But who cares we won at home .:whoo:

Why immediately suggest that the Croatia team we played last night was a 'couldnae care' Croatia. They put out their strongest team - including some superstar players who their clubs would most definitely not want to get injured. We beat a full strength Croatia (10th best in the world by current rankings) wanting to win - get over it please! :)

..well maybe not their absolute possible strongest - be we didn't have our possibly strongest team out either. Great result against a World Top Ten Team.

Yup, only made it to the play off, which was also not guaranteed last night, hence the strong team and risking bans for players on yellows.

Play off was already guaranteed before last night. Serbia also won last night and finished 3rd in the group 3 points behind Croatia. They were 6 points behind them before last night.

My post still stands then. They haven't qualified.

Nope. Not every second place team qualified for the play off...9 groups = 9 winners and the 8 best 2nd placed teams fight it out for the last 4 spots of Europes 13 WC spots.

It never materialised, but last night Croatia could have finished in the 9th best 2nd spot...why do you think they risked a full team? They did have something to play for last night and were beaten by the better team fair and square.

Denmark was the 9th team who didn't make the playoffs with 16 points and could not have caught Croatia who were already through with 17points to the playoff round, other results could have no effect on them . BTW any type of win is a great win for Scotland,:whoo:

Re Croatia - with them having to win their play-off game(s) then surely NO game is meaningless. Indeed a game in the lead up to their play-off games take on significant importance - especially for players brought in for regular starters desperate to prove their worth and get a chance of a start in the PO and a ticket to Brazil.

I'd have thought that for Croatia the fact that their 2nd position in Scotlands Group was guaranteed was irrelevant for many if not all of the players - they would desperately have wanted to put on a cracking show and produced a good win against the minnow that is Scotland these days (but at least hopefully one day fairly soon we will turn into a frog and make great leaps and bounds :))

So I am having nothing take anything away from a cracking result by our lads!

Ah, apologies, I thought one of the other teams could catch Croatia.Should have actually checked before making an assumption.

My Mrs suggested that I shouldn't bother supporting Scotland any more as Scotland doesn't give a monkeys about me (being non-dom). But the problem is I REALLY REALLY DO care - which is why I am a bit annoyed elsewhere on that other matter. But she has a point.

And maybe I shouldn't bother explaining and sticking up for Scottish football when it is criticised down here. So for instance a bloke said to me last night - Scottish football - boring - a one-horse race. I explained that actually it has always been a two horse race and that at least for the time being a club other than one of the OF can come 2nd. So for many supporters of Scottish clubs a one-horse race is not that such a bad thing and adds excitment and interest to the top league. But what do I care.

Indeed, you forfeited your right to "enjoy" the trials and tribulations of a Scotland supporter the minute you took the Queen's shilling and turned your back on your homeland and your countrymen! ;) In fact, how dare you even comment on this thread!

Haven't worked it out for myself but the commentators during the game did mention that it was mathematically possible for Croatia to miss out but required a highly unlikely series of results....

Although checking the tables now that does indeed appear to have been classic commentator poppycock!

That's probably where I went wrong, taking anything Davie Provan says as factual is a basic error.

Which is almost funny and I would have laughed were it not for the statement of fact that it is for some people.

Aimed at me?For clarity:

Being Scottish and deciding to live in England and wanting to be allowed to have a say in the referendum is different to being Scottish and deciding to live in England and supporting the national team in any sport...some of the most passionate Scottish guys I know live outside Scotland, they obsess over the football team, which is great. But they're still not getting a say next year, and their opinion counts for nowt unless they're on the electoral role up here.
