Trying to update the maps on HID's Toyota is turning out to be a right PITA, I havent even worked out if its free yet (doubtful).

If I just use Waze or Googlemaps does it burn through phone data or are the maps offline ?

It’ll cost data I’m afraid, as both have live traffic updates and so on, at least as far as I’m aware.

Depends really on data allowance. I use Google Maps a lot, and I really do mean several hours daily, and it doesn’t come close to burning my allowance.

I tried to get a VW dealer to quote for updating the satnav in my car, but they never responded to calls or emails. And it wouldn’t have been desperately cheap.

I remember the Sat Nav in my Citroën showing an update was available..
The Service Manager said not to bother as it was a several hundred quid thing...
I never did.

You can download maps and routes, Google Maps, but then you don't get live issues which can be very useful at times.

I use Google Maps and it barely makes a scratch on my allowance. I've never done it but it would be a good experiment to do a journey and then see if you can calculate the allowance usage used. I suspect it is very low. Unless you have a freakishly low allowance, I would not worry about using it.

Google Maps is the best SatNav you can use. It has so many users that the traffic info and the way it replans quicker routes is usually spot on. It knows where all the speed cameras are as well. If your phone is older and you're worried about the battery draining, you can just buy an in-car charger that goes into the cigarette lighter and have it plugged in. Data-wise, unless you have an infinitesimally small amount of data on your contract, you very unlikely to use it all.

I only use Google Maps as my SatNav.
Since I last reset the data counter on my phone 2 years ago it's used 14Gb of data. In that period I've done 36,000 miles in the car.

Can you not use android auto or apple car play so that it goes through the cars system?
I don't want to. The satnav in the CX5 is very good, giving delays, roadworks and alt routes very efficiently:)
The VW van doesnt have anything other than satnav, but I dont want my phone visible all the time.:)

Your phone doesn't need to be visible if you are linking via android auto. Mine sits in a covered slot in front of the cup holders.

If you prefer the inbuilt system, that's fine 🤷

The CX5 has Android auto, but I like the integrated sat nav it came with:)
The VW Transporter doesnt have Android auto, but the built in sat nav in the head unit is fine.
When I did try Android auto in the CX5, I didn't like it's interaction with everything else, or rather how it stops other things from being simple to use:) PLus, the CX5 gives me directions on the HUD so I don't have to avert my watching of the road ahead;)
