I find distance control on flat out wedge shots very hard to judge. Sometimes the ball will run up the face and lose a lot of the forward momentum. For me it's easier to hit half or 3/4 shots with a p/w or 9i to get the right distance.

52 goes 95
58 goes about 65 although I don't think I've ever played a full shot with it on a proper round unless I need to go over trees.
Rarely hit a full shot with 52 either, half swing with 9iron gives same distance but much better control

Think im a bit off when it comes to wedge distances
9 iron - 150 ish
PW - 135 - 140
50 degree wedge - 115
54 - 90
58 - 70
Basically i hit 5-pw with some sort of pattern, but when i get to my wedge the height increases massively and the gap between my PW and 50 is quite large
I hit all my clubs quite high however it is silly high when i get to my bladed wedges. Regardless of what make and model wedge i have owned, the all go mega high.
It does not cause me any issues mainly and i can stop a wedge shot on a sixpence regardless of conditions, however i will say that when the wind is in my face is KILLS distance. The shots just ride the wind up up and away.

I don't think I've ever tried to take a full shot with a 56*, it's for bunkers and around the green, anything longer then it's my 52* or P/W or a bump & run with my 8i.

Never use my sand wedge for full shots, preferring to get a little creative with my pitching wedge.
I suppose if I did try to hit it flat out my ball would go about 10 yards but the divot would go about 50.....

Not knocking anyone on here, but it seems strange to me that some don't like to hit a full shot with the high lofted clubs. I'm not saying anyone's right or wrong, we all use what we use in our own way to try and achieve the lowest score. For me a club is a yardage, not a number (as in 5iron) and my preference is to play a full shot over a 3/4 or knock down or however else you describe it.
Anyway, my point is I always like to try and take something away/learn from others, so I'm thinking I should maybe start working on some set yardages with a 9 or PW for when I have a straight shot in with no trouble in front.

Good to see that last para, perhaps you may be able to reduce your 11 handicap if you practice and concentrate more on control and choice of shot from 100 yards in. Distance without control on short irons for boasting purposes is not the cleverest option.

For me it is all about playing the probabilities. A full swing with my 56 may well go around 80 yards, but with the bounce there is a risk it'll contact thin and end up 120+. Take my approach wedge, PW or even a 9I and I can swing much easier and pitch it forward. So yeah, unless there is a specific reason I need to get it up and down in 80 I'll more than likely take something else.

You've got 4 wedges in your bag so next time you're on the range/practice ground do some work hitting targets at around 25, 50 and 75 with all 4.

I used to play with a mate who hit everything at 100%, including sand irons into greens.
He had a lovely swing but I often said to him that if he could manage to rein it in a bit, his handicap would tumble.

Quite happy hitting full shots with all my clubs.
Even the 60 wedge gets the full treatment at times. I hit down so there is no danger of the thin shot bullet.
Full shots come in high and have plenty of spin. Those clipping half 9 irons will come in much flatter and have less spin.
Use whatever you find comfortable for any specific situation. It's all about having the little white ball under control.

Cheers for the constructive replies fellas. I 100% agree that the more control I can gain from within the 125 and in the better I'll play and hopefully the hc will drop.

i like to hit a full shot if i can ,makes more sense to me to hit a club that i know will be the distance rather than trying to manufacture a half hit shot of some sort.
you dont hit a three quarter five iron ,no,you just hit a six ,the same for the wedges ,i really dont understand trying to hit shots that arent natural .
its obviously different when you are within fifty yards or so maybe more for some ,but there is so much chance of quitting on a half shot than a full shot .
