I know a few guys from that area used to post here so hoping they are still around.

I will be staying in the Oakham area for a few days and wondered if anyone could suggest a nice wee pup/hotel to accomodate us.
Not golfing mainly family history research and a visit to Barnsdale Gardens.
Obliged for any info
thanks.

Your not a Northerner, are you?

The George Hotel in Stamford, 10 miles. Lovely little town, and a couple of excellent curry houses. The a course just a few miles up the A1, Rutland County, that has a good driving range...

There are a few options. In the middle of Oakham you have the Whipper Inn which is a hotel and restaurant. Pub wise it is next to The Nelson which is a top pub serving good food and lovely fresh pizzas. If real ale is your thing then The Grainstore next to the station has Its own brewery. Just outside of Oakham you have Barnsdale Lodge which is in walking distance of the gardens. If you want loads of on site facilities then there is Barnsdale Country Club. Both places have great views of Rutland Water. Best pub for beer and food for me is The Wheatsheaf in a village called Greetham about 8 miles from Oakham. If you want Michelin star then there is the Olive Branch at Clipsham or Hambledon Hall just outside Oakham. If you want food and beer with views of Rutland Water then The Finches at Hasmbledon is worth a shot.

I lived in Rutland for 8 years and my family are all still there in Oakham and Greetham so if you have any questions I can get you answers

Hobbit The George is a bit pricey for us but does look very nice.

Thanks GB
The Grainstore was formerly part of the Rutland Brewery which was owned by my wife's relatives.
Going back a bit her Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was vicar at Cold Overton. Interesting move ..Church to Brewery in two generations.
On our last visit there about 5 years ago I did remember a couple of nice pub/hotels in Oakham.

It is now owned by Tony Davis who used to be head brewer at Ruddles
