When is advice, advice?

Hi. I've been subscribing to GM for some time, but have only just registered for the forum so please be patient with me!

3 of us were playing "Chairman" on Saturday morning. (It's a match play format. When you win a hole outright, you go in the "chair". If you win a hole when you're in the chair, you score a point. The player with the most points wins the dosh.)

On the 13th fairway, one of my playing partners, Dougie, found his ball in the heavy rough after his tee shot. He gritted his teeth and decided to chip out onto the fairway, but he couldn't see where the ball finished.

The second player, Dave G, directed Dougie to a ball in the middle of the fairway and this was dispatched expertly to 10 feet.

However, it turned out that the ball was in fact Dave G's.

As it was Dougie found his own ball and scored 5. Dave replaced his ball and 3 putted (guilt?) for a half. I was 3 off the tee so out of the hole but remained in the chair as a result.

But, what would the rules say?

Dougie would lose the hole as he played the wrong ball, I'm sure, but would Dave G have be penalised for giving advice too?

Happily, I sank a 60 foot putt on the last to win . :D

Thanks for the replies.

I've realised, of course, that finding someone's ball for them is not advice and so no formal penalty would have been given to Dave in those circumstances.

However, if he had tried to claim the hole after his duff information had disqualified one of his opponents, he'd have been subjected to a group wedgie at least! :D

Oh and before I forget, RGDave, jealousy is a terrible disease. Get well soon. ;)
