Rules Knowledge

Thanks Jezz i did not know that .. apologies to white_feather for wrong advice ..

No problem, and you're not alone in that. Played a fourball betterball matchplay a few years ago, and one of our opponents tapped in a four-footer before I had a chance to say, "Oi, you can't do that?" Didn't bother making him replay it though as it was only a semi-friendly.

Repairing the hole is subject to one or two things too varied to explain here. Best to check the finer details of that one on www.randa.org where Decision 1-2/3.5 gives a fairly detailed answer

chris, well done for posting one of the most fragile subjected posts known.

Then i have a group of casual playing partners, who dont take it to serious and are just out for a walk and a talk so to speak. Ive pulled them on a couple of rules (more as a wind up to play mind games) and for this picked up the nick name of "text book". they laugh and wind me up about it, but as stated dont claim be to a golfer if you dont know the basic rules.

QUOTE]

i get the same stick from my mates as they dont tend to know some of the rules. Although they soon turn to ask me about stuff when they want relief for various reasons.

i like watching golfing world on tv where i learnt some rules from when they show them. and got an app on my phone the R&A rules and occasionally do the quick 10 question test which is how i learn things. Like people said rules are there to help you and penalise you so its handy to learn certain ones

I take it from all of the "you MUST obey ALL of teh rules all of the time" proponents that none of you ever Speed on the public highway ?

Oh i do to well.

We was playing our normal swindle and one of our group would constantly pick the rake up and drag it back through the sand before going to play he's ball. Some would argue it was to speed up play, some would argue testing consistency of the bunker surface.

he had done this for 6 bunker shots and on our 16th i said in a joking way to one of our playing partners " cheeky sod has done it again "... the guy i mentioned it to said if you dont call him on it, im disqualifying you for not adhering to the rules of golf. I was forced to call a 2 shot penalty on a guy who had a total nightmare game with something silly like 22 points after 16 holes. On the 16th the was in the green side bunker for 4 on a par 4 and took 2 to get out, , so hardly a chance of scoring. Now yes is was a money game, but knowing that you need to be shooting 40points plus in our swindle, what was the point in calling this penalty, we could have just notified him of the breached rule and be done with it.

Afterwards over a bear i said i was happy to let it slide but i couldnt as i had been called for not calling the rule, they guy was fine but refused outright to play with the chap who called the rule on me ever again. We explained that we was only educating him on the rules, and that it was better to learn when he's had a sh*t round than when he had a good card going... but you could see he wasnt impressed.

so your saying if you know someone is breaking a rule and dont pull them for it someone can then penalise you?

Also, this is not like football/rugby where, to an extent, you can tip up and play without knowing the rules inside out as there is a ref (any footballers ever read the rulebook?).

Thsi is absolutely flawed - i insist, for even teh most basic kick about, that EVERY player, including eth kids and granddads and occasional mother, can adequately describe the offside rule.

There is absolutely no reason why this shoudl eb difficult or frowned upon - they are only cheating themselves by playing and abusing a FUNDAMENTAL rule of the game

I also insist on checking everyone's footwear before we play, take off all jewelry, and all make a binding statement that we won't dive or call each other racist names.

Funnili, none of the kids will play with me any more . Their loss

Ahhh the rules, their interpretation and implemtnation otheriwse known as how to ostracise yourself in one 4 hour round. If you were to stop and implement every rule and the relevant penalty to all the infringments you saw on a Saturday morning in a roll up or sadly a comp as well you'd be lucky to escape with your glofing life.

I will be a stickler in my three ball in a compm. No grey area. Its a comp and them is the rules. If I saw something so blatantly obvious behind or in front I'd mention it but usually I'm too focussed on my own debacle. As for roll ups, most of our groups are pretty sensible players and to be honest will play by the book. We sometimes get the odd incident that no-one is sure about and argue the toss afterwards if we really have to. It shows though how open to mis-interpretation the rules are and how some people are so entrenched in their incorrect belief that they are right that they stubbornly refuse to accept what the magic books says. I don't know how we change attitudes and re-educate though

and got an app on my phone the R&A rules and occasionally do the quick 10 question test which is how i learn things. Like people said rules are there to help you and penalise you so its handy to learn certain ones

I sincerely hope that's not an iPhone App that you use on the course, otherwise you should have been disqualified every comp you took it out :(

yes its an iphone app.. no i dont use it whilst playing.. i do the quiz when sat in work van bored and cant be bothered to play any other games..
the app is literally a digital version of a rule book anyway so why would I get disqualified if i did reference it during a comp?

I don't think you would. My understanding is you can use it as a Phone, as an Internet browser, etc, but not for weather or compass. You can't use it as a dmd as it has a compass ap built in, whether you use it or not. Stupid? Yes. No one ever said it would make sense.

OK, having read back through the posts, it seems there are huge errors in the implementation of the rules through mis guided pig headedness, inexperience, laisse faire attitude and dare I say it downright skulldguggery. Ignoring roll ups, friendlies, etc where there will always be an element of give and take at most clubs what do we do to change it for medals and stablefords. The obvious answer is to ping culprits and slap a penalty shot or two on if they digress but tough love ain't going to win a lot of friends. Isn't this where the EGU and their new super conglomerate featuring the EWGU have a huge part to play and are in truth letting club golfers down.

Its all very well saying everyone should have a rule book and refer to it. The truth is trying to get round in a medal doing that at this time of year means 20% of the field are at risk of not finishing. Surely more has to be done at grass roots level and ensure that the basics are well and truly entrenched in everyones psyche and that the big culprits (free/penalty drops, red/yellow stakes, nearest point of relief, GUR and lost ball etc) are covered regularly and in a way that gives maximum exposure.

Maybe Jezz with his rules hat on can tell us what the R&A take on it is. They must(?) be aware that there is a degree of digression in most medals every week which must cause some concern. How do they propose to educate the average Joe Golfer or are they happy to sit on their hands and do nothing?

. . . and if you add in winter rules with all the variations of where, and how, you can and cannot drop/place etc, local rules - rarely seen and often misunderstood.

goes back to what I keep saying - any time the Decisions book is bigger than the Rule book, you've got the Rules wrong.

It stands to reason if the postings are anything to go by that many a club comp is won by someone who has infringed the rules on their way to victory. I have my club presentation evening tomorrow and there are one or two winners, one a low handicapper, who is thought to be willing to cheat if necessary and everyone will see him pick up cups and be suspicious whereas I may have inadvertantly broken a rule in winning my trophy but if I did, I was, and still am, oblivious to the wrongdoing.

I figure he would be a cheat where I would be a regular golfer although in a minute someone will post to the contrary.

Just as an addition to the last posting. I played in a monthly medal a while back and signed for a decent score and when I checked on How Did I Do .com my recorded score was one less than I signed for. I drove to the course that day and insisted that the club secretary retrieve my scorecard and we checked everything to see where the shot had been saved as I wouldn't have been content to win on a mistake etc. It turned out that both the scorer and I had, apparantly, misread a score in the adding of the card and the comp score was right.

I was then happy to take the win

Chris

its crazy how every club seems to have a member who is known to be a cheat. i am aware of one at ours, who went so low he actually cheated a family member out of a knock out win in order to progress through and into a later round.
