Whilst aware that a player must not allow his caddie, his partner or partner's caddie on or close to an extension of the line of play or line of putt behind the ball what is the position please if we are playing a 4 man Texas Scramble.

Is there provision on the rule please and if so where?

Our club wrote to the R&A on a different rules issue with Texas scramble, and got a letter back from a gentleman there stating that Texas Scramble is not a recognised form of golf, and therefore all rules on such an event must be set by the local competition committee.

Therefore, if your club has a set of rules for Texas Scramble, consult them. If not, the competition committee can rule on any queried local rule. As a general rule, R&A rules of golf should be applied wherever appropriate.

We are drawing up a local rules handbook for next year to state how the rules of golf will apply to such competitions.

In short - they can stand wherever the hell they want if your competition committee allows them, but if there is no local rule noting an exception to 14.2, then the rules of golf should be applied (ie not standing behind the line).
