Rule 14 - free relief question.

But surely not a different **TYPE** of ball? You're not allowed to change ball types during the play of a single hole, that hasn't changed has it?
Hard to believe which is my I asked the original question but if you apply the rules exactly as written it says "with another ball" nothing about it being the same make or colour.
obviously makes sense when you cannot retrieve the original ball but maybe nobody thought about applying it to "preferred lies"

I think in the end it's more of a perceived advantage than any real one.

Don't think it was ever the case, let alone changed, unless the one ball rule was applicable to the event being played.

Last year (to keep it simple) if you hit your approach shot with, say, a Pinnacle, into a water hazard to the side of the green, you could drop a ProV1 to continue play of the hole.
Principle established.
What's fundamentally changed are the circumstances under which you are no longer required to play the exact same ball, and nowhere before, nor now, is whether any substituted ball is the same type a factor.

This only applies if the Conditions of Competition specify that the same specific type of ball must be used for the whole round. Unlikely unless you are playing in a pro or very high level amateur competition. Or in a competition where the organisers have grand ideas about the status of their competition

Just being picky - it's now "Terms of the Competition" and the one ball condition is now under Local Rules.

Model Local Rule E-3 (preferred lie within 6 inches) reiterates the right to place another ball in the relief area. This contrasts with E-2 (preferred lie replacing where the ball was) where the original ball must be used

Oops. Thanks for pointing that out. The devil in me wants to give this a go on Sat just to see the reaction of my fellow competitors.
Enjoy. Apparently it can be particularily annoying to play alternate shots with different coloured Truviz balls! 👍

Can someone point me to the exact rule on this, just for clarity?

Thanks
6 3 b (see post #2) for substitution
MLR 3 being the preferred lie rule that no longer references marking (to bring it into line with the general principle referenced in 14.1 that a ball to be replaced on a spot requires to be marked before lifting whilst a ball that doesn't doesn't.
