I managed 7 three putts and a four putt during my round this morning, although I did also have 4 one putts including a birdie. Just couldn't get a feel for the speed of the greens, either only getting the ball halfway to the hole, or charging it 10 feet past. Although I didn't play too badly tee to green, my gross score was 96 for 24 points. It was pretty windy by the way, so I wasn't expecting a great score. The daft thing was that I went on our practice green after the round and holed everything. Golf is a stupid game sometimes! Has anybody else had days like this?

It's February.

Just be happy you're getting to play.

Our course is starting to dry out after the deluge it suffered a few weeks ago, but still a couple of fairways that are like bogs. It's only been since last Friday that we have had all 18 holes open! :)

I notice my putting gets worse the more I try and force a stroke. If I leave the putter to do all the work everything comes back within a couple of putts. Putting is all about rhyth, loose it and you loose all feel and confidence buggers off.

Practice green before the round may help with pace.
I got stuck in heavy traffic on my way to the club, due to some problems with the M40 and/or M25 I understand, with everybody diverting off them, so didn't have time to practice anything. Having said that I often go straight out without practising putting and usually putt OK.

You will putt better if you do even two minutes before you play.

Hit a skem handful.

A 10 footer or two.

20 footer or two

And two as long as you can find.

Did exactly the same myself today, turned up late for tee off marginally. Luckily the course was dead. Went out with no practise, played some cracking stuff tee to green, driver only put me in trouble twice in 18 holes. 3 wood was like a machine, struck 2 off the deck aswell which was a first. But my putting was awful. I'd guess around 7 or 8 3 putts. Oh and a 3 putt on a par 3 after missing the green and chipping on. Joyful.

I'm normally disappointed to have any three-putts in a round, maybe the odd one when I am left with a long and difficult putt. I couldn't blame the greens today, because they were about as perfect as you could hope for at this time of year. My putting stroke seemed alright, as I proved on the practice green afterwards and by holing a few good putts during the round. I took 41 putts when I would normally expect to take about 32 or 33. I was using a different and softer type of ball to what I normally use, so that could have been a factor I suppose? :mmm:

Several three putts is surely down to your confidence being affected by the first three putt, or a lack of concentration.

There is no excuse for a four putt!

I usually avoid our putting green as it is much quicker than the first green.

I was on the green of a long par-5 hole in 4, about 35 feet from the hole. I left the first slightly uphill/sidehill putt about 5 feet short, was a bit too aggressive trying to make the bogey putt, just missing on the high side, going about 3 feet past, and then missing the one coming back on the low side! Easily done, and turned what should have been 2 points into a blob! :(
