personally I think it's one of the best courses for making you think I've played.
you have to consider line and length off most tees - and that's on top of any preference for where to play into the green from!
as with many links courses it's not particularly scenic (yes there are some which have fantastic views as well...) but as a golf challenge, that doesn't even need the elements to present a challenge, it's right up there for me.

I liked it, great course and fantastic clubhouse. Lots of memorabilia in there so have a look around, we got the guided tour from an old member. Looking forward to the Open this year, remembering back how I played each hole

erm...yeah. I wasn't a fan of it to be honest! For me, it just lacked a kind of "wow-ness" Not too many stand out holes either for me. Maybe Links courses just don't suit my eye...

I agree. And I love links courses.
A few too many 'dull' holes for my liking, though certainly some really good ones. And the last couple of holes are disappointing as last holes. I can certainly see why they changed the sequence last time. Have they done the same again?
A good/very good all round test of Golf, but missing something of the sparkle/grandeur that I like about an Open course.

Played there years ago when I was in uni in Loverpool. Typical links but wasnt wowed either (not the world's biggest links fan if I'm honest).

I think it is an excellent test of links golf..
Can understand it is not for every one and agree the set up for "The Open" was an improvement.
The clubhouse is the most interesting I have ever visited,you really must do a Grand Tour.

Thought most of the course lived up to the billing, but then a few towards the back end were a bit "meh"
Didn't rock my boat at all, in fact after playing Formby the day before I was very disappointed. Some nothing holes up & down at the end and the 1st is nothing special.
The clubhouse and all its history is fantastic, but take that away and its an average links course at best IMO.

+1 I first played it for free, then £70. I wouldn't want to be playing £150 plus. Its a very good course, but put it up against the likes of Carnoustie, Turnberry and Royal Lytham and it isn't as good. I'd rather play Wallasey or Silloth, but it can still be enjoyed for what it is and can still be quite tough in places, if windy. The clubhouse/history is great though. FYI The normal 16th (par 5 across the dogleg) was the 18th at the last open played there.

At this time of year it can be very average if an open course can be average. the course is protected by the wind and rough witch dies down in winter so is less defined at this time of year but play in July and its a different story . Just enjoy it its an open championship venue how often do you get to play them. Its a good test of golf play to your h/cap and you have done very well.

Nice course but not as good as I hoped, played it once last March a week after playing Muirfield.
A weak first and a weak finish IMO with 17 and 18 being pretty bland. Holes out towards the estuary are pretty bland. Its definately a thinking course, not always reaching for the big dog is a good way of thinking. I wouldn't suggest its over rated but I genuinely thought it would have more being an open venue. Definately worth playing though for sure.
Clubhouse is very good, lots of memorabilia.

If you don't suffer from heights you will be just fine.
Links courses do tend to lack elevation changes in general but this one puts a pancake to shame.

I would agree with this, it is the weakest of the Open venues along with TOC but worth remembering it is relative. The Open isn't played on poor courses :thup:

back from my trip to Royal Liverpool, and my opinion of it is that it is exceptional! admittedly i was very fortunate to play it the 'open' way round and get to play the 18th with a grandstand to the left of the green, but i think the whole course was fantastic.
Every hole has bunkers well situated off the tee that require negotiation, and i think that my ability to avoid them massively helped in me shooting -1 (yes off the yellows with little/no wind, but still).
I havent played any of the other Open courses but having played Saunton, St Enodoc, Burnham etc i think this place is as good if not better than all of these.
Oh and to play for £25 with a member, well..... bargain!

It is a good course, but is it VFM? Would you be happy to pay £150 to play it. I was happy paying £70 (first time was free BTW), but I wouldn't pay over £100. A bargain indeed!
Muirfield Guest fee is apparently no longer the bargain it once was! They've apparently more than trebled it! to a Tenner!
Different attitude to Guest fees at some courses - especially Scottish ones. The expectation is that the courtesy will be returned and that if you weren't playing at theirs, you'd be playing at yours. Much more a 'Club' approach than the 'It's a Business' one of most Southern ones.

On golf holiday in Scotland =Met two scots who invited us to their course for a game. Signed us in for £1 Paisley golf club was very nice course . The courses and clubhouses in Scotland are the social side of the country
