I am booking a few days of golf for July and planning to take advantage of our recipricals and maybe take HID away for a couple of days and looking at Royal Eastbourne. Anyone played it? Worth the trip

Sorry can't help you, never played Royal Eastbourne.
I'd recommend just a few miles further along the coast Seaford Head, not to be confused with Seaford Blatchington.
SH is worth it just to play the 18th! It was Peter Aliss's favourite closing hole.
It is a Municiple but arguably one of the best in the South East.

All true.
But make a day of it and play Seaford/Blatchingdon as well. It's a lovely heath/downland course.
Seaford head is pretty short, so not too tiring for a 36 holer.

As mentioned, it's free so enjoy it. Would agree that Seaford Head is a very well kept course with stunning views but as a challenge Seaford Blatchington is an excellent course and in my opinion superior to Royal Eastbourne.

Royal Eastbourne is a much better golf course / club than Seaford Head
Their website has a good course guide with real fly over videos, not computer generated. Recommend you look at those.
You could always go for a walk along the cliff top at Seaford Head, (public footpath / access), the closing holes are all situated up there and look down the 18th to see what all the fuss is about. Playing a tee shot down a very steep hill doesn’t do it for me, whilst the the rest of the course is so so.
