Never played this course, but the society at work are suggesting it for our end of year meet in December. Has anyone played it during winter? I know during winter no course is at it's prime, but some hold up better than others (Kings Hill is a prime example of being good during winter.)

its a cracking course and will test your game to the limit, winter golf is not really a lot different to playing there in the summer as the heather dosent go anywhere ,some great views across the forest and it is a tad hilly. make sure your driver is working well as most holes have a swathe of heather in front of them and a duffed tee shot will definately cost you shots.

Be aware that there are 2 courses - The Old and The West! The West used to be run from the Hotel that adjoined/s it and is a nice, relatively short but tricky semi-heathland course that we used to play after work (in Tunbridge Wells). The Old is right up there with the very best heathland courses. Tough walk though!

Both courses drain/absorb water very well. Neither have any sand bunkers, but plenty of grass ones and other 'hazards' to test accuracy!

Not sure whether you'd have enough daylight to have a round on each in December, but that makes a very pleasant day that doesn't exhaust folk like some can.

Never played the Old course but most societies play on the West. As has been said no sand bunkers but plenty of other challenges!

Wasn't the West previously called the New? Remember playing it and staying over in the hotel and replaying the new/west the next morning in a delicate state after a very long night in the bar. The Old course though is a really top course and worth its top 100 spot and imagine it'll still be in good nick in winter

seriously dont bother with the west it dosent drain as well as the royal and is not a patch on the royal. chalk and cheese springs to mind.
the royal at one time was touted as in the top four in the world by one golf magazine all be it back in the early seventies ,and it really is a great course .the west wouldnt make the the top 50 in sussex.
