Hi there, Im a noob to golf and have been taking lessons straight off as not to learn bad habits, irons are ok, but my drive has a rather amazing right hand flight to it.When i sweep it the ball goes straight off the tee then flys to the right. is there any drills i can do when i'm practicing up the driving range trying to correct this, until my next lesson?

Hope that makes some kind of sense?

try putting a couple of clubs on the ground to line you up. Put a club on the other side of the ball and line it up square to your stance pointing in the direction you want the ball to go. Concentrate on making your club follow the line of the club on the ground. A big thing for me is to not try and hit it hard. try a nice relaxed controlled swing.

i'll give it a go tonight, thanks for the reply. My teacher was saying i need more rotation it's hard to grasp it all and make your body do everything in the swing. feels so alien at first. i've been going up 2/3 times a week to improve. what would you recommend some good drills to do? want to make the most out of the practice sessions?

sorry for all the questions, like i said i'm a noob!

welcome t-m!

Two possibilities....you are either not getting the face square (does it banana? like a slice) or just go straight right, in which case you're pushing the ball.

If you slice it.....welcome to the world of golf.....there's lots to try to improve it, easiest is just to crank your left hand a little around the grip (and set the right to match) and see if a few degrees provides an instant cure. I hold all my wood (metal woods 1/3/5) a little "stronger" than my irons. You can only go SO far with it though because if the bad ball starts left then goes right (classic slice) which I get now and again, if you turn your hands too strong the ball just goes straight left.

If you are just pushing it......check the line of your feet with a club shaft while you practice....check your shoulders are not pointing right. Easiest thing to do (on the course) is just to move your left foot back an inch....but DO NOT try this if you are a genuine slicer..

Yes my friend you have come to the right place.

Lots and lots of reasons for this, its more commonly known as the SLICE!!!

I will refer you to the best drill I have come across, the 3 ball drill.

Click me for a fix

The best and most offered advice would be to take some lessons from a pro. But with a little hard work and commitment this drill will do enough to straighten that flight out somewhat.

Welcome to the forum

I just realised your already having lessons silly me.

Next lesson you have, get the pro to explain the out to in swing and the effect it has on the ball, it will help you to understand whats going on.

Without a club in your hand, face twelve o'clock and address an imaginary ball. Put your right hand on your left shoulder (where the arm joins the shoulder) and your left hand on your right shoulder.

Now turn your top half only to 3 o'clock and all the back through to 9 o'clock. Practice this for a couple of minutes before hitting a ball.

Wow, thanks for the great replys. I'll mull over what you all have said. I'm at work at the moment so taking a shifty break to ask questions on here!

Thanks again, i'd better get back to work! can't wait for tonights knock now!

Further explanation please.

I think this is a weight shift drill to stop sliding, I often do this with a club behind my neck. I did it non stop for about 4 weeks trying to keep my bottom half as still as laterally possible.

When I went for a lesson a couple of months ago I was told that I had very little rotation and my lower half was doing and Elvis impression! (thank you very much!) Both of which the Pro was telling me contributed to my slice.

Sorry, didnt really explain that very well at first.

I have suffered with the collapsing knee problem or the drunken staurday night dance routine as my pro called it. I'm currently working on a better posture with a straighter back and more knee flex which is giving me much more stability

I too have suffered with the drunken Saturday night collapsing knee whilst trying the boogie problem, particularly on a Saturday night whilst trying to boggie after 10 Stella's.

Ruined a pair of Levi's

Mainly the left collapsing in towards the ball. Robs the swing of any power and leads to lateral movement causing tops and heavy shots. The new posture has cured all that and I'm more stable and have more resistance in my swing which makes it more compact and powerful. Well it does at the moment anyway

That's it! This is what's been going on (to me) I'm sure....

Thanks.....time for the old beach ball tomorrow.

Yes it did work for me. My weight shift was less noticable.

I still do it every now and then just to keep in the groove and do it to warm up aswell.

I was told by my pro to forget all about weight shift and just let it happen naturally because when I was thinking 'i need to be on the back foot now' I was actually moving on to it. When I did forget about, it settled down!

Hello to you and welcome, now, You say you have had lessons (plural)so as not to learn bad habbits?
Who is teaching you?
Are you taking a full swing with your clubs? (if you are, its my view that as a new player you are already off to a wrong start)

I would love to help you out but your post is a little confusing to me, if you are taking lessons and its a good teacher, stick with them and dont ask others or you could get confused early in your golfing life.

If you havent had lessons dont try to run before you can walk.

Im sorry but I really need more info and clarity in what you have done/are doing to give any positive advice, Im sorry if it appears unhelpful or critical but your post creates it. :D
