Rory

wow.... is this another tiger-esk thread....you know, that bloke that people said would never win again..
So many idiots, he has one iffy year and people suddenly right the bloke off, I will bet anyone £100 he'll win another major within a couple of years.

I hope he can and prove me wrong, he's an exciting talent to watch when he's on his game and hope he recaptures it, as you've brought up the tiger-esk ;-) thing ill counter your bet offer with I bet he won't win another major before woods

Oh I think there will be, but of course, not directly. For that amount of money the quiet discontent at board level will have already started. You think Nike are happy to be associated with a major disappointment (no pun intended)?

He needs to start being in the running on the 4th day, any 4th day. Once he does 4 consecutive days of solid golf that everyone knows he's capable of, we may just see him move on a gear from there, again.

Do you want me to list those with great potential that failed that Nike are associated with and remain so? I'll start one, Michelle Wie, years to come good and Nike threw money at her.

Nike have did the deal and thats it, they can do no more and the more pressure they stick on Rory the less good it will do. In the grand scale of all things Nike $150m is chicken feed, they've probably had it all back already in profit worldwide.

Another would be Anthony Kim... Good player hurt his thumb now just well does he still play!!!

I keep reading threads about talks at Nike boardroom level, the executives are twitchy. It's all nonsense, probably the only 3 people who are twitchy about Rory's form right now are

1 - Rory himself

2 - His coach Michael Bannon, who could be changed in a heartbeat

3 - Paul McGinley, who will be looking for him come next September at Gleneagles

1] Should not have left Chubby and surrounded himself with yes men.

2] Should have not reduced his playing schedule so severely.

3] Everyone seems to think that the clubs are an issue when it really is the two above points.

Kim has been unlucky with injuries. Very good player. Kim was in sensational form when he destroyed Sergio in the 2008 Ryder Cup and has a decent record. He's actually out after surgery to repair the Achillies tendon. Bit unfair to label him a flop just yet.

One of the last things McIlroy will change is his swing coach. Bannon has been coaching him since he was a child and even though its only recently bannon has went on tour with him, McIlroy always came back to NI to see him when he felt the swing needed work.

In a round about way though his 'slump' has got so many people talking about Nike clubs! Granted some of it is negative BUT I would say more people are saying Nike clubs are good/not to blame etc. I have spoken to non golfers/new players who have been asking about Nike clubs as they knew about them because they heard folk blaming McIlroys woes on them but then heard a certain T Woods uses them too! Any publicity is good publicity isn't it?

So 'they' say. Including Mr Ratner.

You may have misunderstood my post. I wasn't in any way, shape or form saying that the top men at Nike were worried that sales would suddenly plummet due to his dip in form, it was in reference to the huuuuuuuuuuugggggggeeee sponsorship deal (for one of Nike's biggest faces) and the so far lack of return on investment from it. Selling an extra 10000 sets of clubs worldwide, europe or whereever wouldn't have the exec team doing cartwheels. Rory winning a major however and the mass media frenzy that came with it, would.

Surely selling the extra clubs is the tangible return on their investment no?!

I think thats the point i'm making or have made. The deal has been done, he has the potential, everyone knows that. If he doesn't meet it over the duration of his contract do you think they'll renew?

They won't be twitchy as they ain't playing poker or betting on black or red, they'll want him to come good obviously. They are where they are...

But whatever figures you use as an example in believing that Nike would be happy with the 'oh well' attitude to the detriment of millions is ludicrous and of course they'll be hoping and praying he comes good before every single tournament he plays, however big or small.

Or is he simply looking for another excuse for his poor play and total lack of interest.

What makes you say he has a lack of interest?

I don't understand how people can question his attitude. He's playing badly (by his standards) and looks completely crestfallen whenever I've seen him on the course or in interviews.

It'll help no doubt but it isn't the be all and end all as Valentino said, the winning mentality is which is my point. You could probably times the example of 10k by 10 if he comes good. But Apparel is were its at for them. Those retailers on here will know the ridiculous margins involved. But they'll also know about the riduculous minimum orders and the price breaks involved too. Bet the sale of Nike trousers and underwear rocketed when the Tiger scandal broke...even their balls, perhaps...:D

Selling clubs is the only reason to do it

You could argue that they have signed Rory, who in conjunction with Tiger legitimises them as a golf brand, but ultimately it’s all about selling clubs
