rory

Imo hes young and he will definately bounce back, and win majors.I think his head was gone, not his putting.I dont think he handled the pressure at all well, and thats worrying, however it may in the future make him stronger, only time will tell.Fantastic viewing, and looking at all the post not many picked the winner right until the end.

Rory just needs to spend a week putting - nothing else just putting.
He hit 1 poor drive, was leading for 63 holes and putted like a 20 handicapper.
If half the putts he had from 10 feet and in dropped he'd have won. The 1st should have been a easy up'n'down for him, even though the putt was 5 feet or so. It didn't move much.
Same with putts on 11 and 12 and probably a few more as well including the last.
With a better putting stroke he would have walked it and it wouldn't have
mattered that he took 7 at the 10th.

Sorry to go on but a week on the putting green is not what he needs. I believe the reason he kept missing short putts was not a technical but a mental issue. He also had a poor swing on 13, not just 10.

4 years ago he was still at school.
Now he's playing in front of 10 million people worldwide for a major championship and over $1m on a 7,500 yrd course with greens at 12-13 on the stimp and elephants buried in them and the best golfers in the world hunting him down.
Let him serve his apprenticeship

He is very young and maybe leading all the way through didn't do him any favours as the pressure builds and builds.

Almost Charl did would have been better and charging through to win one without really noticing it, like he did at Quail Hollow on the US tour.

He looked like he was bricking it from the moment he stepped on the tee but, like Bobmac says, he's very very young still.

Really hope he gets over it as some of his golf over the first 3 rounds was just ridiculously good, head and shoulders above everyone else tee to green.

Not really understanding all this 'Ah,leave him alone, the poor wee soul is young' take.....I don't recall Tiger looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights at Rory's age.

Was thinking the same thing. He is young yes but he's still a young MAN.

I've not read the whole thread but..........

Did anyone else think his pre shot routine was quicker yesterday than in the first 3 rounds.

Reminded me of Greg Norman in '96. Every shot followed the same routine in the same time for 54 holes, then in the last 18 the routine was inconsistent. in Rorys case, his routine was quicker than it had been.

In the lead up to his tee time, they showed a comparison of two of his putts in previous rounds, he did the same things at exactly the same times in the putts. Then the short putt he missed on the first he did the same things but quicker and did so for the rest of the round.

That's because Tiger was "programmed" to win! Rory is a great talent but mentally he's miles behind Tiger at the same age.

But as Bob says he's got to learn and he's doing it the hard way!

I commented last night that he seemed to be struggling to pull the trigger......an extra wee grip before starting the swing, would love to see a comparison but if it was say 3 seconds before he struck his long shots on day 1,2,& 3 he seemed to freeze on 3 and pull the trigger on the 4th second on many an occasion.

Agreed!

Comparing Tiger to ANY golfer is totally unfair. Tiger has known NOTHING but winning golf his entire life.

Rory is a young man who was a "normal" kid doing his A-Levels (or whatever) and played golf as a "I'm pretty good at this golf lark, maybe I'll start to take it seriously when I'm done with school" hobbie 4 years ago.

Sad to watch but I think Rory is young enough and talented enough to bounce back. I sincerely hope so anyway as he has huge talent.

Tom Watson blew the 1974 US Open with 41 on the back 9 in the last round and also fell back after leading at the halfway stage the following year. He later said he had to learn how to lose in order to learn how to win. I think he meant he had to understand how you can lose and experience how much it hurts to lose in order to develop the mental toughness to close out a Championship. Hope that works for Rory too.

Otherwise a great Championship. Agree that the coverage was very Tiger orientated, but at least he was in contention, and it would have been a great "story" had he won so I guess the broadcasters were hoping for that to happen. My favourite gratuitous Tiger moment, on the mini inset leader board:

Tiger Woods -8
3 others on -8

but the "others" were not Tiger so obviously not worth naming.

Oh and just been to pgatour.com, the official PGA Tour website, and this is the lead story under a big picture of Tiger and the guy that carries his clubs:

"Is this where the story begins? Maybe history will show this Masters was where Tiger Woods' slide ended and his comeback began." :D

Anyway:

Well done Charl Schwartzel, 4 birdies on the last 4 holes, a deserved winner.

Well done Luke, proved he can mix it on the last day of a major. Love the chip-in on 18.

Well done Jason Day. Amazing effort for a young guy.

Although Rory couldn't handle the pressure I am sure a good sports psychologist will help him work things out, he has a decent support network in his management and I am sure he will be back playing as strong as ever. The real test will be when he is back in a similar position, and how he handles it again. A great competition, some fantastic golf, and good coverage. Go Rory.

Rory did a Greg Norman...

Though i felt the BBC's coverage was nothing but a disgrace IMHO why bother show highlights a day late when the 2nd day was well under way .
And the the presentation that was shown after the program had finished on BBC news was pathetic those 2 women talking through the chat between the ABC presenter and the Low Amture winner just because he was Japanese .

I certainly thought he rushed, or didn't take enough time on his putts. Hopefully this will change with experience.

I've said in a previous post that he's young enough to bounce back. But as the great Bob Bubka said on Talksport today, "Everybody said of Greg Norman when he lost a 6 shot lead, that he's young enough to win the Masters but in the end, never actually won any"
I do hope that's not so in Rory's case.

Golfmmad.

Learning curve for the youngman but I think he'll be able to get over it...took Phil a good few years contending before he eventually won one.

Not sure about his caddy,I know he aint hitting the shots but to me he could have done more to settle him down or slow him down....time for a change??

Hardly a fair comparison...Greg was already 41 when he had his collapse and his best years were behind him.
