rory

that was a long night's viewing, more ups and downs than the National. Got to be the tightest finish to a Major in a long while - and with so many 'outsiders' involved.

Is anybody going to risk betting on the other three?

Didn't back anyone in this years Masters but did tip Charl.

I seem to do well at the Masters, done well since tipping Mike Weir!

I had Ogilvy e/w at 70-1, was cursing every time someone made a birdie late on but fortunatley (for me) Choi and Cabrera fell away so Ogilvy held on for 4th so £92.50 back off a £10 stake minus the £10 I wasted on Mickelson meant a £72.50 profit - enough for a pair of golf shoes!

Back of the net! ;)

Well, I fell asleep during the last 4 hole stretch

That's what staying up until 4am watching Sky+'d coverage the last 3 nights running.

But woke up to see the summary of "how it happened" at the end of the show.

I'm not going to lie, once Rors fell apart (poor bloke :() I wanted anyone but Tiger or Schwartzel to win it...But fair play by the Saffer, he shot some stunning golf and he definitely "won it" instead of just nobbing it round safely enough to post a score.

What a fantastic weekend of golf though.

I'm happy Schwartzel won it. Seems like a nice guy. Didn't want Scott to win. He is a champagne Charlie, all the talent, no application. And he has a silly putter.
Would have been happy if Angel had won. Jason Day? Maybe, but have never heard of him. Woods? Nice to see him back competing, and hope he continues to challenge, but may be a bit early for complete rehabilitation.

Great watching last night though.

The next time anyone dares to claim Westwood is a choker/bottler, perhaps they'll recall this. As soon as Rory made bogey on the 1st, I had a horrible feeling it was going to be a Norman-style '96 collapse. I had no idea how wrong I was going to be.

It was so, so much worse.

Horrible watching a pro play like a member; really felt for the lad. I just hope he puts it behind him and goes and finds that putting coach. He should have been 8 or 9 clear going into that round, not 4.

On the plus side, a Euro tour winner again and a bloke who I wouldn't have given a whisker's chance at start of play played outstanding golf all round. To birdie the last 4 at Augusta is unbelievably brilliant and a well-deserved win. Might use the money to get his teeth fixed now ;)

Pleased to see Scott fall short. I like the bloke, but anyone using a putter that is anchored to the body is cheating every time they putt, pure and simple. They (long-handled putters) need to be banned. That, or let poor chippers throw the ball, poor drivers use stabilisers on the ball and poor ball strikers play off mats.

Also pleased to see Misery Guts fall short. He makes Howard Clark and Colin Montgomerie look like 'fun' alternative playing partners in a noisy crowd. Utterly joyless and long may he remain winless.

Nice to see the US has got over the Ryder Cup. It's the only explanation I can think of for barely seeing a shot from Donald over the back 9 and for putting his name at the bottom of the leaderboard, despite having played more holes than others on the same score.

And why when Woods hit his approach to 15 it was 'stunning', 'amazing', 'only he can do that' (even when he proceeded to miss the putt), but when Van Pelt did it 5m later with a better shot and made the putt, it was simply 'well played'?

All in all, a fantastic Major with the most extraordinary back 9 leaderboard I've ever seen. It was only until about 16 that you could choose from 2 or 3 and until then you had more than half a dozen within a shot. Brilliant, exciting stuff.

Not bad for an invitational is it? :)

I agree toonman to a certain extent, but if you look at Rorys card, it was a three hole explosion caused by clipping a tree trying to take a little off the corner. He actually regained a little composure after the first two holes.
The putting elsewhere was crazy pure and simple, kind of reminded me of my putting a few weeks ago on the tined greens. On those silky Augusta greens there isnt much of an excuse to rush the ball past the hole by 5 feet missing the hole completely, saying that Tiger did the same at least once in his back nine.

Twice in a week I've agreed with everything you've written

I'm off to call the doctors. ;)

I do think this will make Rory a much better player though. I'm calling it now, Rors to win two of the remaining 3 majors this year. You heard it here first.

But he did continue to miss putts throughout. And at 10, after the tee shot, he plays back onto the fairway and then tries to reach the green with a thrash when he should have concentrated on getting down for a bogey. Then he compounds it with a pitch into a tree and then fluffing a chip - 4 poorly executed/attempted shots on 1 hole - we're guilty of that sort of idiocy, not pros!

You're right that it was only a couple of holes, but it was the manner that was more significant rather than the frequency. Question marks over the caddy on 10 for me. I felt he let him play the pitch and the chip too quickly and should have talked him out of attempting to reach the green with his 3rd shot. Still, Captain Hindsight is a wonderful man to have around...

not a chance - he may win a tour event but a major? not for at least a year (not until after the next Masters). He should be back in time for the Ryder Cup though

All good stuff. Well said that man.

A worthy winner in the end.

And I am sure Rory will bounce back. Sport at it's cruellest though...

I enjoyed the TW interview after his round too. It was nice to get a reminder of what an utterly charmless charisma vacuum he is.

Felt for Westwood - he was genuinely gutted and I just hope he gets his putting sorted without feeling the need to persevere with a belly putter. Should not be allowed and the R&A really got it wrong with these clubs.

Lastly, highlight of the week - Jason Day's missus.

in some ways it was great nights golf with so many leaders but in the other hand with rory falling away so bad it was a painful watch.

I am glad the camera did not follow him the rest of the way in, what must have been going on in his head after that 7..

Have to say did think it was coming (but not as bad as it did) with a four shot lead at the start of the day and after 6 holes it was only 1. The pressure was on and with him not putting that well the other 3 days and only his tee and green playing saving him you did feel once that left him it was all over.

I am sure he will learn well from it and once he sees it all back he would see his errors and know that if he drop a shot or two on the 10th he could have still won it.

Am sure he will come back a better player for it.. Just really really hope his putting can get better i do feel its the weakest part of his game even before the masters.

But anyways have to say i did njoy jason day seemed to really njoy himself and even he missed one or two he always had a smile on his face.. personally that's something i need to learn to do more.. My bad temper and mood gets the better of me alot of the time.

all in all its a good and tight a game of golf you could wish.. Just hopefully next time it can be a N.I Golfer winning it!!

EDIT: as pointed out above another +1 for jason days gf..

Feel sorry for the kid but for me he's got to stop the messing about with Poulter he's holding him back as Monty said at the Par 3 comp the Likely Lads.

He's got to be more like Tiger when he was winning everything in sight, focused on what he's there for as he's hugely talented kid.Just my thoughts.
