Rory again showing he struggles in the wind.

Everyone struggled!! Mcilroys major struggle was on the greens. If he had putted anywhere decent he could easily have knocked three shots off his score. I think he 3 putted twice, missed at least one really short one and didn't hole anything. If he'd shot level par would you have said he struggled so much?

No I wouldn't have but he didn't.

If my Granny had baws she'd be my Grandpa but she has't so she's my Granny.

He struggled.

I agree but because of his putting. Name all the really bad shots he had? I can think of two full shots only. His tee shot on the front 9 par 3 and his wedge into the par 5 that he hit to the right. Other than that I can't think of any others.

He struggled with distance control all day.He always does when the wind is up,I hope it dies a bit because I would love him to win or at least have a chance.

McILroy did struggle, On the greens. There's no way missing just a couple of greens can be classed as struggling with his long game. I think you'd be hard pushed to find a single player that hit more than 70% of the greens yesterday, the difference being they made putts and Rory didn't.

He actually hit some good drives and some really good iron shots, didn't make the putts though. Personally not a fan of his but I can't say I think he struggled with his game other than his putting, which has been flakey for sometime hence why he is working with Stockton.

Did he?! Again I can't remember too many shots that overly long or short. I think it's just a lazy observation-it's windy and mcilroy shot +3 therefore he can't can't play in the wind.

Ok went to town on this just put this to bed. Watched the front 9 that I had on sky+ of both woods and mcilroy and took stats.

Fir:
RM 4/5
TW 4/7
*they didn't show two of mcilroys drives or approaches but of those two he hit the green in reg on both.

Gir:
RM 6/9
TW 3/9

No of putts:
RM 16
TW 12

Average length of putt holed:
RM 3 foot
TW 14 foot
*for this one I estimated the distance unless the commentator did.

Longest putts holed
RM 6ft, 5ft and the rest all 3 foot and under.
TW 35ft, 25ft, 20ft, 15ft, 15ft, 10ft and three under 3ft.

Can you tell I'm at a loose end today haha but it easily proves what I'm trying to say.

Rory has used Newport/009 styles in the past, as well as Del Mar style and the Fastback style, with various hosel shapes (centres shaft, heel shaft etc). He has been to Cameron's putter studio in CA a few times, including one early pre-pro visit when Tiger Woods came in while he was being set up.

Wow,that is a lot of chopping and changing, maybe he should stick to one style and hosel type? I have tried many putters over time and always come back to an Anser type with a plumbers neck, everything else feels wierd now!

Heard one of the commentators comment about the reason why the course is so tough in the wind. Basically the wind blows like a links but becuase the course is soft and uses different grasses, it doesn't run like a links. That means the players can't play links golf and run the ball into the greens and they have to fly it all the way. Hence the extra difficulty. Can't remember who said it but I thought that was intersting and a plausible explainaton of the high scores.
