Rors might lose a few fans across the pond after this.....!!!

If I decide to see Lewis Hamilton as Greek, not British, it's my choice.

It's still wrong.

McIlroy is British by birth. He has a choice to claim Irish citizenship should he want. He hasn't exercised that right.

There is nothing Irish about McIlroy.

Sorry for having an opinion, there was me thinking that's what forums were for.............

He can play for Jamaica as long as he's eligible... Its his choice. Hopefully he will represent GB as we have a better chance of gold with him than Westwood or Donald! Or Rose or Poulter or ANYONE else

Opinions can be, and in this case are, wrong.

You consider him to be Irish but he is 100%, irrefutably British.

Hopefully, going forward, you won't consider him to be Irish unless he takes up his right to claim Irish citizenship.

Who knows what will be happening in 2016.

Only two months ago many people on here said McIlroy was already washed up. :D

I note you didn't quote the facts I stated that proved I was right.

Where do you want me to start? He has represented Ireland already for golf so thats Irish enough for me. Golf and boxing are both run as whole island organisations therefore golfers and boxers can represent Ireland at the olympics again thats Irish enough for me.

What part of those fact can you not follow?

I'm more interested in seeing him represent Europe at the Ryder Cup in a couple of weeks and hopefully, carry on the amazing form he's showing.

I could see these headlines coming as soon as it was announced golf would be in the Olympics. I hope we don't have these stories swirling around for the next 4 years and instead appreciate an outstanding talent.

Qualifying to represent a Golfing Union of Ireland team does not mean he is Irish, it simply means that he meets the criteria set out by that union.

Your facts are completely separate from the laws of citizenship.

I know...but according to Kellfire he is 100%, irrefutably British. So he should have declared himself ineligible for Walker Cup and World cup....unless of course he feels a little bit Irish too?

Why should he because the Walker Cup I believe is GB & Ireland against the US, unless my knowledge of golf history is incorrect.

By the way, McDowell also represented Ireland at the World Cup. He is also Northern Irish and British and not Irish.

Just to mess with your head some more. ;)

It's McIlroys own words. He will upset nationalist and unionist diehards one way or another, says more about them than McIlroy.

Without wanting to sound patronising, you have to be from Northern Ireland or the neighbouring counties in the Republic or have a long serving knowledge of it for people to understand why this would cause so much unrest.

G-Mac is sitting on the fence and has done for a while now...He must be getting splinters. He also said he would be proud to play for either.
What if in 4 years Rory for whatever reason did not get into the GB team would he want to play for Ireland after saying he felt more British?

I'm sure the definition of opinion is - someone's personal view.

I think it's safe to say this is best left here.

Agree with this. I was born in Donegal but grew up in Galway until I was 18 then moved across the pond. Even nowadays there is IMO still a divide.

Without sounding patronising either, I'm from the West of Scotland and I know as much as anyone why there would be unrest.
