Rors might lose a few fans across the pond after this.....!!!

I'm from south of the border and think that rory is British as he hasnt taken up Iris citizenship and he will represent Britain at Rio which is his decision and whatever he chooses will affect some people but I for one am ok with whatever he decides and Will remain a rory Fan

I am from NI (although now live in England, obviously), and am entitled to both Irish and British citizenship, as well as passports from either state. People raised as Catholics traditionally align their identity with Ireland, those who are Protestant align with the UK. Rory is a bit of a hybrid, being a Catholic by birth, but having attended a State (i.e. Protestant) school. He is entitled to represent either the UK or Ireland. Northern Ireland, of course, is not part of Great Britain, so the name Team GB technically excludes it.

It is a complicated and divisive issue, but Rory was born at a time when things had started to change for the better, and the old divisions are fading (perhaps slowly). I therefore take no offence if he wants to align himself with the UK, although it is not what I would do, and I would hope that NI Protestants take no offence when aspects of Irishness are also attached. Darren Clarke, although raised and schooled as a Protestant, uses the traditionally Irish shamrock as his logo.

For me,the bigger issue is that golf in the Olympics is a bit dodgy. I will watch it, for sure, but I can't say I really will expect to take any national pride in seeing millionaires winning medals for playing golf for any country.

I myself have no issue who he plays for if he plays! I am one thing though and that is extremely proud of how rory gmac darren padraig, michael hoey, paul mcginley shane lowry etc etc represent this small part of the world, showing theres more to our country north and south than some parts of the media wish to highlight everytime something bad happens!

well if the biggest worst problem we have between now & 2016 is the rich old Rors nationality , i will be a very happy man ..

I think we read too much into stuff like this if rory is at the olympics who will he be wanting to win it for ? Irl , NI . GB or for Rory ?

Let the chap represent who ever he wants , it wont change the way i think of him , its not like he is going to be british & kill the irish or vice versa .. its sport & lets try keep politics as far away from it as is humanly possible

Exactly, the fact they are local lads who have done us proud is enough for me. Does it matter what the bigots say? some people just cant be educated and are quite often hypocrites too.

I debated whether to even reply to this thread but I couldn't resist.

I find the whole topic disgusting and pathetic this is a 23 year old who plays a sport for a living. The fact that people continually want to pigeon hole into a group to either champion or attack him makes me feel sick. I know the majority on here have said they don't care who he plays for, as I do myself, but the fact it's even discussed annoys me greatly. Rory has continually tried to avoid such nonsense but people keep trying to push him on the subject. Let the boy play golf. If people are upset or angry by whatever his decision is then good they're idiots and when idiots are unhappy it makes me a little happier!

I feel so sorry for the lad having to deal with this rubbish!! If someone could just dig a big trench at the border and push ulster as far away from Ireland and the rest of the uk I'd be there with a spade and oar to help. I'm not British or Irish I'm from northern Ireland and I'm proud of it.

Rant over!!

Ulster includes three counties which are part of the Republic of Ireland, so cutting Ulster off would be a bit of a problem. Loyalism adopted the term Ulster because they did not like the word Ireland in the name of their statelet but used it inaccurately from the start

You should have stayed out of it rather that post that trash.

The fact that I'd prefer to not be part of Ireland or the uk may be trash to you but it's what I believe.

I'm hoping actually it's the language I used that you describe as trash in which case I can only say that this was the only way I could describe how frustrated I am with the situation surrounding this country and metaphorically what I'd be willing to do to change it. Unfortunately my writing skills have never been my strong point.

I know this but when people refer to Ulster then they are invariably talking about northern Ireland, as I was. I think you're nitpicking a little there in my opinion.

As Ethan mention, I was referring to your inaccurate point about Ulster starting at the border, your writing skill are fine it's your geography you must work on ;-)

They are indeed often referring to NI, but wrongly so. It isn't just a minor point of pedantry or nitpicking. It is imbued with a great deal of loyalist politics, history and ownership.

When rugby, GAA or golf teams refer to Ulster, they are referring correctly to the 9 counties.

NI nationalists do not like the incorrect appropriation of the name Ulster as a label for the 6 counties, and I would never refer to myself, or let go uncorrected, any reference to me as an Ulsterman.

Cracking post.

Ok...

I apologise if my use of the word ulster has caused offence or misunderstanding.

When I used the term I meant simply northern Ireland. This is due to my upbringing and the language used in the media etc but my use of the word was careless. I understand how this can cause offence especially to the residents of the counties within ulster that are not part of northern Ireland. I think it was also a mistake to call this nitpicking. It may be nitpicking to me but to others it may not.

My view that I would like northern Ireland to be completely separate from Ireland and the rest of the uk remains because I feel no connection to either but again I apologise for my use of word ulster incorrectly. My aim was neither to cause offence or be intentionally provocative but simply to portray my frustration that a 23 year old sports star is being used like a political football in the media and the situation in general

As someone who grew up in the Republic of Ireland side of Ulster and played schoolboy soccer for the province and Ulster championship football for my county I am always proud of my Ulster background.

Anyway good luck to Rory whatever he decides to do. I for one will support him 100%

It's a fact of life that you can't keep everyone happy. Whatever he decides, some with love, some will hate.

I say best of luck to him, whatever he chooses. I'll continue to be a fan of the lad, whoever he chooses!
